🐾 MEET POPEYE — HIS HEART IS WORTH EARNING! 💙

Popeye may not fall in love with you at first sight…but give this little guy some time, patience and kindness, and you may just discover an incredibly sweet, affectionate and devoted companion. 🥰

• 9 pounds

• Up-to-date on vaccinations
• Microchipped

Popeye’s foster describes him as a sweet, funny little guy with a bit of a cat-like personality. He likes to decide when you’ve earned your way into his inner circle! ❤️

When Popeye first meets unfamiliar people, he can be very fearful and defensive. Sudden movements, loud noises and lots of activity can frighten him. He needs people who understand that trust isn’t something he gives immediately—it has to be earned.

But once you earn it? Oh, what a different little dog emerges! ❤️

Popeye becomes incredibly affectionate and loving. He enjoys cuddling, sitting in your lap and simply being close to his person. His foster says that once Popeye trusts you, he is absolutely worth the wait.

He loves walks, mealtime and snacks and is very food motivated—which can be a wonderful tool for continuing to build his confidence and training. He also loves tennis balls, although apparently nobody has completely convinced Popeye that bringing the ball back is part of the game of fetch. 😂🎾

Popeye loves his foster sister and may enjoy sharing his future home with another compatible small dog. He doesn’t particularly enjoy being left home alone and would love a family where he can have plenty of companionship.

He is also making good progress with potty training. He lets his foster know when he needs to go outside, although an occasional accident still happens.

🏡 POPEYE’S IDEAL HOME

We believe Popeye will thrive in a calm, quiet, adult home without children. His person needs to be patient and willing to allow Popeye to approach life—and new relationships—at his own pace. He isn’t the dog who will immediately run into a stranger’s arms, and he shouldn’t be pressured to.

What he needs is someone willing to say:

“You don’t have to love me today. I’ll give you the time you need.” ❤️

For that person, Popeye has the potential to become an exceptionally sweet, affectionate little companion who will happily curl up in your lap once you’ve earned his heart.

Come at 11:00 AM to draw your number for the order in which potential adopters enter our play yard to meet the dogs. There is no advantage to arriving early. Everyone participating at opening has the same opportunity to draw a number.

🐾 Could You Be Their “For Now”? ❤️

Not every rescue dog needs a forever home today.

Sometimes, what they desperately need first is simply a safe place for right now.

A quiet bed.
A patient hand.
Someone who gives them time to decompress.
Someone who shows them that people can be kind.
Someone who says, “You’re safe here until your forever family finds you.”

That someone could be you. 🏡🐶

Chihuahua Rescue Truckee Meadows needs foster homes. Every new foster home means we may be able to say YES to another small dog who needs us.

You don’t have to be an expert, and you don’t have to do it alone. Our rescue provides the supplies and support needed to care for your foster dog. You provide the home, patience and love. ❤️

And yes—letting them go can tug at your heart. But watching a frightened, confused or homeless little dog blossom and then leave for a family of their very own? That’s what fostering is all about.

🐾 FOSTERING SAVES LIVES — JUST LOOK AT TUFF. 💜

When Tuff first came to us, he was terrified, painfully thin, and on the euthanasia list. He didn’t understand that people could be safe. He didn’t know what his future held.

Look at him now.

His body has become healthier and well balanced, but perhaps the most beautiful transformation is the one you can’t measure on a scale — his mental and emotional healing.

Just watch this video of Tuff getting his morning cuddles from his foster mom. 🥹💜

This once frightened little dog is beginning to relax. He is allowing affection. He is learning that hands can be gentle, that people can be trusted, and that being close to someone can feel good.

That is what fostering can do.

A foster home gave Tuff the time and safety he needed to begin becoming the dog he was always capable of being.

And we need more people willing to be that safe place.

Some dogs need a little extra patience while they heal. Others simply need a temporary place to sleep, eat, play and be loved until their forever family finds them. Every foster home makes room for another dog to be saved.

You don’t have to be perfect. You simply have to be committed to helping a dog along the way.
