The Heatwave Chronicles: Daisy Mae and Nubs
The North Carolina heatwave had settled over the backyard like a giant invisible blanket. Even the squirrels had called a temporary truce and retreated to the shade.
From her post inside the cool house, Daisy Mae sat at the window, staring intently onto the deck.
There he was.
Nubs.
Perched on the arm of the wicker chair like he owned the place.
The little lizard had carefully chosen the highest seat on the deck, where he could watch Daisy through the glass while pretending he wasn't watching her at all.
Daisy narrowed her eyes.
Nubs turned his head ever so slightly.
The challenge had been issued.
Normally, Daisy would have exploded toward the door, nails clicking across the floor as she raced outside to show Nubs exactly whose deck this was.
But today?
Today was approximately one thousand degrees.
So instead, Daisy remained seated.
Nubs remained seated.
For nearly fifteen minutes, they engaged in what can only be described as a professional staring contest.
Momma glanced over from across the room.
"Are y'all seriously doing this again?"
Neither contestant acknowledged her.
Nubs puffed out his tiny chest.
Daisy lifted one eyebrow.
Nubs bobbed his head.
Daisy let out a low grumble.
The battle was escalating.
Slowly.
Very, very slowly.
Finally, Nubs decided to make his move.
He hopped from the chair arm onto the bag of garden soil below, landing with all the dramatic flair of a Hollywood stuntman.
Daisy immediately stood up.
Well...
She started to stand up.
Halfway through the process she reconsidered because air-conditioned floors are wonderful.
Nubs waited.
Daisy waited.
The heat shimmered above the deck boards.
Neither side advanced.
A few minutes later, Nubs climbed back onto the chair arm and settled in exactly the same spot.
Daisy huffed loudly.
That little show-off.
He hadn't even gone anywhere.
He'd simply wanted to see if she was paying attention.
Of course she was paying attention.
That was the entire problem.
As the afternoon wore on, the two rivals continued their silent game through the window.
Every time Daisy looked away, Nubs would move.
Every time Daisy looked back, Nubs would freeze.
Every time Momma checked on them, they appeared to be doing absolutely nothing.
But they knew.
This was war.
Heatwave war.
By sunset, the deck had finally cooled enough for Daisy to venture outside.
She stepped onto the porch and looked around.
The chair was empty.
The garden soil bag was empty.
The railing was empty.
"Nubs?" she seemed to wonder.
Then she heard a tiny rustle.
There he was, tucked behind the chair cushion, watching her the entire time.
Daisy barked once.
Nubs bobbed his head once.
Both seemed satisfied.
Tomorrow, they would do it all again.
Assuming they could gather enough energy to move in this North Carolina heat.
And so the legendary feud between Daisy Mae and Nubs continued—not with lightning-fast chases or daring escapes—but with slow-motion taunts, suspicious staring, and two stubborn creatures refusing to admit they might actually enjoy each other's company.
