Meet Freddie! 🐈 💛 This handsome guy has a look all his own—and it only adds to his charm.

Freddie is a 7-year-old domestic shorthair who came to CCVS to see Dr. Emery and our Dermatology team for ceruminous cystomatosis—an ear disease commonly known as “blue cysts.”

Because the disease was more advanced in Freddie’s right ear, he underwent a Total Ear Canal Ablation (TECA) at another specialty hospital where Dr. Emery also treats dermatology patients. This procedure removed the severely affected ear canal to help provide Freddie with long-term relief.

Fortunately, his left ear is less severely affected. Dr. Emery plans to use CO₂ laser surgery with the goal of preserving both the ear and its canal while treating the diseased tissue.

Freddie’s case is a wonderful example of how collaborative veterinary care can help meet each patient’s unique needs. Our specialists work closely with primary care veterinarians and colleagues at other specialty hospitals to coordinate care and pursue the best possible outcome for every pet.

From advanced ear disease and chronic infections to allergies, skin conditions, hair loss, nail disorders and more, our Dermatology team offers a wide range of diagnostic and treatment options tailored to each patient.

Meet Pickle, a 4-month-old linneolated parakeet! 🦜💚

Pickle recently came to see Dr. Berg and our Zoo/Exotic Medicine (ZEMS) team for their very first veterinary visit to establish care with us.

Primary care is an important part of what our ZEMS team does at CCVS. Exotic pets have unique needs, and caring for a parrot can look very different from caring for a dog or cat. From nutrition and enclosure design to behavior and enrichment, there is a lot that goes into helping these incredible animals live happy, healthy lives.

Our ZEMS team spends a full hour with each new patient, evaluating their health while also taking the time to discuss the many aspects of their care with their family. During Pickle’s first visit, Dr. Berg discovered some congenital abnormalities affecting their legs that may require special accommodations as they get older. Pickle also received a health certificate so they can safely board at a parrot boarding facility.

While our team loves the challenge of complex referral and emergency cases, we’re equally passionate about seeing exotic pets when they’re healthy. Establishing care early gives us the opportunity to identify concerns, provide education, and help set our patients up for the longest, healthiest, and most fulfilling lives possible.

Meet Nova! 🐕🖤

This sweet girl is a 3-year-old Labrador Retriever who recently visited CCVS to see Dr. Ulfelder for a laparoscopic spay and prophylactic gastropexy — and, as you can see, she has some feelings about the dreaded “cone of shame" 😅

Unlike a traditional spay, a laparoscopic spay is minimally invasive and performed through just two small incisions. This can mean less discomfort, a quicker recovery, and a faster return to normal activity.

Nova also had a prophylactic gastropexy, a procedure that helps reduce the risk of gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV), commonly known as bloat. GDV is a life-threatening emergency in which the stomach becomes distended and twists, cutting off blood flow. A gastropexy helps prevent the stomach from twisting and can be especially beneficial for larger, deep-chested dogs that are at higher risk.

Nova was able to head home the same day. We loved having her at CCVS and are wishing her all the best as she gets back to her normal routine! 🐾

Meet Mr. Quinn! 🐕💙

Quinn is an 8-year-old Golden Retriever who was seen by Dr. Carvalho with our Internal Medicine team. At the time, Quinn was carrying some extra weight and his coat had become dry and thin.

Based on these changes, Dr. Carvalho recommended adding a T4 test to his bloodwork to evaluate his thyroid function. The results revealed that Quinn had hypothyroidism, a condition in which the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone.

Quinn was started on levothyroxine to help manage his condition — and what a transformation! ✨

Since beginning treatment, Quinn has lost 40 pounds, his coat has become soft and fluffy again, and his family says he even has his “puppy” energy back! 🐾

👩‍⚕️📖🐾🌟 It was an exciting day for the future of veterinary emergency and critical care!

Our CCVS residents were among 25 ECC residents from across the Northeast and Canada who came together for a full day of immersive, hands-on training. Throughout the day, each resident had the opportunity to individually perform 12 emergency and critical care procedures, along with hands-on training in dialysis, ultrasound-guided IV placement, and open-chest CPR simulations.

Experiences like these give residents the opportunity to practice advanced, lifesaving techniques in a learning environment so they can return to their hospitals with greater experience and confidence when caring for critically ill patients.

Just as exciting was seeing how engaged this group of residents was throughout the day. Their enthusiasm, dedication, and eagerness to learn left everyone involved feeling incredibly excited about the future of veterinary emergency and critical care.

We’re proud of our CCVS residents for taking part in such a valuable day of learning and grateful to the criticalists who shared their time, knowledge, and expertise with the next generation of ECC veterinarians! 🏥❤

Today, we’re celebrating the pups who fill our lives with companionship, comfort, laughter, and unconditional love. Whether they’re curled up beside us on the couch, joining us on our favorite adventures, or simply greeting us at the door with a wagging tail, dogs have a special way of becoming part of the family. ❤️

National Dog Day is also an opportunity to recognize dogs of all breeds and backgrounds and raise awareness for those still waiting to find loving homes.

Meet Maverick & Jaxon! 🤎🐾

These two handsome Labrador Retriever brothers have each had their own orthopedic journey, and we're so happy to see them back to enjoying life!

Maverick (left) is 7yo and was first diagnosed with elbow dysplasia in 2020, along with a secondary osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) lesion—a developmental condition that affects the cartilage and bone within the joint. He underwent elbow arthroscopy to remove the lesion and did well for several years.

In January 2025, Maverick came to CCVS after developing progressive lameness in his right front leg that wasn't fully improving with medication. A CT scan revealed progressive arthritis related to his elbow dysplasia, and our team recommended platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy.

PRP is a regenerative treatment that uses a concentrated sample of a pet's own blood to help reduce inflammation and support healing. Since beginning intermittent PRP injections, Maverick has been doing great!

His younger brother, Jaxon (right), is 6yo and came to us in the fall of 2025 after experiencing intermittent lameness for nearly nine months. X-rays performed by his primary care veterinarian suggested a possible joint lesion, so a CT scan was recommended. The CT showed mild arthritis and tendonitis, and Jaxon responded very well to a steroid injection.

When his limping returned in the spring of 2026, he came back for a recheck and received another steroid injection. Since then, he's continued to do very well!

Caring for pets is a team effort. That's why we work closely with primary care veterinarians to help ensure each patient receives the care that's right for them. By collaborating every step of the way, we can help create a personalized treatment plan that supports each pet's health, comfort, and quality of life.

We're thrilled both Maverick and Jaxon are back to doing what they love—including long walks together. We wish them many more healthy, happy years ahead! ❤️

📅 Tomorrow, August 11, Lorelei D’Avolio, CVT, VTS (Exotics), CVPM will be discussing herbivores—what makes an animal a herbivore, the unique nutritional needs of herbivorous exotic pets, and why understanding their diet is so important to keeping them healthy.

Whether you share your home with a rabbit, guinea pig, tortoise, or are simply interested in learning more about exotic animals, you won't want to miss this month's segment!
