We spend so much time asking our horses to be calm, collected, confident and focused—but how often do we stop and ask ourselves if we are?

Your horse is watching your hands
Your feet
Your body language
Your breathing
The way you approach them
The way you react when something goes wrong.

If you’re constantly tense, rushing, anticipating a problem, confused or asking for more when your horse is already overwhelmed, they feel it. We expect our horses to regulate their emotions while we’re bringing our own emotions into the saddle.

Want a calmer horse? Start by becoming someone your horse can feel calm around.

APPLICATION:
Next time you work with your horse, don’t just watch them, watch yourself. Sometimes the biggest change in the horse starts with a change in the person. Are you staying on the circle you’re asking for? Are you moving their feet or are they moving yours?

Why “Problem” Horses?

A client recently asked me, “Why do you choose to work with the problem horses?” Knowing it is a lot to take on and can consume a lot of time.

Honestly, because I believe they’re often the ones who need someone to believe in them the most. Every horse learns differently. Some need to build strength and learn how to use their body correctly, while others need time to build trust and confidence. Progress won’t look the same for every horse and it shouldn’t.

The same goes for people. We all have different experiences that shape who we are. Some people learn quickly, while others need more time. Some are confident, while others are still trying to find their footing. Just because someone is struggling doesn’t mean they are incapable, behind, or a problem. Sometimes we’re quick to label a horse or even a person as difficult when we don’t understand what’s underneath the behavior.

Maybe they don’t need to be pushed harder. They need someone willing to slow down, listen, have patience, and meet them where they are. Growth isn’t about how quickly you get there. It’s about having the right support, being given the chance to learn, and having someone believe in you along the way.

Sometimes the “problem horse” doesn’t need to be fixed. They just need to be understood, given patience, and shown a different way.

I wish I had better before pictures to truly show this mare’s transformation! One of my favorite parts of training is watching a horse change both mentally and physically. Through patient, correct training and a balanced diet, she’s developed the right muscle, gained confidence, and is looking better every day. Progress like this doesn’t happen overnight, but it’s always worth the wait.

First official ride on Rex! 🤍

This horse has been such a rewarding restart. We still have plenty of work ahead of us, but he’s making great progress.

Rex was considered “broke” because he had all the buttons and some training. The problem was that he had been pushed too hard without being given the time to slow down, process, and build confidence. Instead of thinking through situations, he learned to simply react. On the ground he would become tense with every movement, and under pressure he would often panic or blow up.

By taking things slow, focusing on relaxation, and helping him respond instead of react, we’re seeing the horse he used to be years ago. It’s been amazing to watch his confidence return, and every session is another step in the right direction. From not being able to walk on the ground or in the saddle I am loving to see this!

Thank you, Rick for trusting me with your boy throughout this process. I’m excited to see just how far Rex can go! 😊
