You can never, ever have too many pictures of your puppy. We'll concede that once your dog is all grown up, there are only so many pictures of them sleeping adorably curled up on the couch that are worth saving. But your puppy changes all the time! Worry about the storage on your phone another time. Kids and puppies deserve all the gigabytes you've got.

We got a little pushback when we posted this picture (even though it is AI). The person told us that making a dog wear clothes is the cruelest thing you can do.
We can think of lots worse things - she must live a sheltered life.
The post the picture goes with is actually about how different collars and harnesses signal to dogs what kind of fun they're going to have. A particular harness or collar may mean you're going on a sniffari. A different one for Obedience or Rally Class.

Getting the right harness fit for your dog depends on measuring in the right place. While coats and sweaters use the measurement from the base of the neck to the base of the tail, harnesses use the dog's "girth." To get the girth, measure all the way around, just behind the front legs. That's usually the deepest part of the dog's chest. If you don't have a tape measure, use a piece of string or yarn. Mark it and measure it against a yard stick or retractable rule.
Measuring is really the only way to be sure. Every maker has their own size chart. And there's no way to guestimate based on weight. After you've gone to the trouble of getting that measurement, write it down! Or keep it in your phone. Create a "Contact" with your dog's name and keep their vital statistics in the notes!

Whether it's across town or across the country, lots of people will be on the move the next couple months. If you're among them, are you taking your dog? It's certainly easier now, with many short-stay options. We love having our dogs with us when we go. We sleep better, have an excuse to get outside for some fresh air, and somebody who's always happy to see us.

If there's a dog in your trick-or-treat plans, please make sure their harness or collar fits right. You never know what scary sights and sounds may be around the corner and frighten your dog. If they are held securely, your fun won't be cut short by an untimely escape.
Either a harness or collar should be snug, but not tight. It fits right if you can get two fingers, lying flat, between the gear and the dog. Any more and you risk a flight attempt. Any tighter and choking may be the issue.

'Tis the gift to be simple. We're big fans of simple. The fewer moving bits, the fewer bits to break.
If you want to stick a GPS tracking collar on your dog, by all means do that. If it gives you peace of mind to pull your dog's location up on an app, that's what you should do.
Our dogs have legible, engraved tags on their simple leather buckle collars. In case they ever slip away, whoever finds them can call us on the spot. The leather collars get softer and more comfortable with time, and they don't irritate the dog's skin or mess with their fur.
