Let’s talk about the reality of animal rescue right now and fostering…

The reality is that there are dogs in shelters all over the United States that are dying each day. There are too many dogs and not enough responsible owners, causing an overburdened shelter system. 😟

Sadly, pitbulls or bully breed dogs are at the top of the list of dogs being euthanized.

That is why those of us who volunteer, foster, and adopt with SEPR choose to make a difference to dogs who have nowhere else to turn. We are truly the lifeline for every dog that comes in our program. These dogs have no one else. Nobody else is coming!!!

Our waiting list is long, so long! There are dogs we have to turn away, dogs who don’t make it out of the shelter.

So, that’s why when we have a sweet, shutdown girl like Calypso, we are heartbroken that no one wants to foster her. 💔

Calypso has been through a lot. She has been repeatedly let down by humans. Rightfully so, she is guarded. You can tell that she wants to trust, if only someone would give her a reason.

Calypso‘s ideal foster home is a home that’s quieter, a home that can let her unwind at her own pace, a home that can give her a consistent routine, and a home that can show her that humans can be good. 💤🦴🏠🐾

Calypso is just one of the many dogs begging you to fill out that foster application today. There are so many dogs, from so many shelters, who are just waiting for that ONE human to say yes to them.

🙏 Praying this will be the week that someone says yes to Calypso and to so many of the other dogs who need a human to care. 🙏

❤️🐾 $5 FRIDAY for COLONEL — GIVE NOW 🐾❤️

Sometimes the dogs who wander into rescue leave pawprints on your heart before you even realize it’s happening.

Colonel was found roaming the streets of south central Sioux Falls for days, narrowly avoiding traffic while desperately searching for someone who never came for him. 💔

And honestly? That’s what made this story so difficult.

Because this boy clearly belonged to someone once.

He already knew commands.
He understood routines.
He got excited when the leash came out.
He wanted so badly to trust again.

Then somehow… despite all the houses and roads in Sioux Falls… he just kept wandering back into Foster Mom’s yard.

Maybe the universe had a plan for them both. 🖤

This week Colonel visited Dr. Tom and the incredible team at Tea Veterinary Clinic for a full medical workup, and while everyone hoped his neuter would be simple… Colonel apparently had other plans. 😅

Turns out this handsome shepherd mix was a “one ball boy,” meaning his second testicle never descended, so Dr. Tom had to open up his abdomen during surgery to retrieve it.

Honestly?
Colonel would like everyone to know you can absolutely still be this handsome with just one ball. 😂

On top of that, he was also dealing with a severe bilateral ear infection packed full of goo and discomfort, but thankfully medications and treatment are already helping him feel much better.

The good news?
His X-rays looked fantastic and despite his neighborhood adventures, he somehow managed not to eat any rocks along the way which Foster Mom says is a major accomplishment for a shepherd. 😅

And while rescue life has been a huge adjustment, Colonel is trying incredibly hard.

He’s learning gentle leader walks.
Ignoring rabbits and squirrels like a very distinguished gentleman.
Playing with his new ball.
And slowly starting to understand that routines, safety, and trust can exist again.

Dr. Tom estimates Colonel is around 5–8 years old which honestly is kind of the perfect shepherd age. He still enjoys adventures and fun, but he’s not some chaotic puppy bouncing off the walls 24/7. Foster Mom says with all the commands and skills he already knows, he could probably even help teach another dog someday once proper structure and introductions are in place.

Because yes… Colonel is smart.
Very smart.

But healing emotionally after being abandoned takes time too.

Right now we’re focusing on slow decompression, positive experiences, medical healing, structure, and helping Colonel continue building confidence one day at a time while we search for the right forever home.

As you can imagine, extensive veterinary care, surgery, diagnostics, medications, food, enrichment items, and ongoing rescue support add up quickly for a large breed dog like Colonel.

So this week, we’re asking Team SEPR to rally around this incredibly special boy. ❤️
