🐾 “How do I get my kids involved in training?”

This is one of the questions I get asked most often.

The answer isn’t to hand your child the leash and hope for the best.

It’s to model first, coach second, and support throughout the process.

Kids learn dog training the same way dogs do—through clear guidance, practice, and positive experiences. 💜

Before I ask a child to work with a dog, I show them exactly what success looks like. Then I coach them through it, helping them learn how to communicate clearly, reward effectively, and recognize what the dog is telling them.

The goal isn’t just a dog that listens to your child.

It’s teaching communication.

When we model the skills first and then coach our children through the process, they learn how to become clear, consistent, and fair partners for their dogs.

✨ Model the behavior.
✨ Coach the child.
✨ Support both the dog and the human.

When we slow down and teach both ends of the leash, everyone learns. 🐾💜

People often think dog training is about obedience.

For me, it never has been.

It has always been about helping dogs and families understand each other better.

Because dogs do not live in training sessions.

They live in homes.

In kitchens.
On family walks.
During busy mornings.
On hard days.
And in some of our favorite memories.

When a dog feels calmer, clearer, and more supported, the entire household feels it.

That is why we do this.

Not for perfect dogs.

For stronger relationships.

For more peaceful homes.

For the life you’re building together. 🤍

A lot of dogs are never actually taught how to relax. 🐾

They practice excitement all day long…

but not calm.

So if your dog follows you everywhere, struggles to settle, gets “crazy” at night, or always seems switched ON, this is usually where I start as a Los Angeles dog trainer.

Not with more commands.

With teaching the nervous system how to slow down.

A few things that help immediately:

• reward calm body language before the dog gets overexcited
• keep calm sessions VERY short at first
• practice when your dog is already somewhat settled
• stop waiting for calm to happen randomly
• make relaxation something your dog actually practices

This is a huge part of what we work on in our Day Training programs across Los Angeles, Simi Valley, Thousand Oaks, Moorpark, Ventura County, and the San Fernando Valley.

Because calm is a skill.

Not a personality trait.

Save this if your dog struggles with switching “off.” 🤍

Welcome Cyrus to the Z Dog family 🐾💜

Cyrus was adopted through .rescue and we are SO excited for everything this sweet boy has ahead of him! ✨

At just 4 months old, Cyrus has already been such a great puppy, and I really want to commend his owners for recognizing the importance of reaching out for training early even though he’s been an angel they still knew they wanted the absolute best for him and training your pup how to navigate the world ensures a life of freedom. 👏🏼

One of the biggest mistakes people make is waiting until behaviors become overwhelming before getting support. Puppies are constantly learning — whether we realize it or not — and early guidance can make such a huge difference in helping them grow into confident, well-adjusted adult dogs. 🧠🐶

Through our Puppy Power Plus Program we’ll be focusing on:
🐾 Basic obedience
🐾 Puppy manners like jumping and thresholds
🐾 Engagement & focus
🐾 Confidence building
🐾 Impulse control
🐾 Learning how to navigate the world successfully

We’re so excited to watch Cyrus grow and help support both him and his family along the way 💜

🐴✨ One of the things I love most about animals is how clearly they reflect us.

Watching my daughter learn to ride has reminded me so much of raising and training dogs.

There are SO many similarities:
• consistency matters
• emotions matter
• trust has to be earned
• communication matters more than force
• confidence is built — not demanded
• the relationship always comes first

Animals don’t learn well through fear, pressure, or chaos.
They learn through clarity, safety, repetition, and connection. 🤍

But there are differences too.

A horse is not a dog.
A child is not an adult.
And good training means respecting the individual in front of you instead of trying to force every living being into the same mold.

That’s something I think about constantly as both a mom and a trainer.

Responsibility isn’t just feeding, walking, or caring for an animal.
Real responsibility is learning patience.
Learning emotional regulation.
Learning how your energy affects others.
Learning how to lead without intimidation.

And honestly? Animals humble you FAST. 😅

Some days are beautiful.
Some days are messy.
Some days your kid rides the pony.
Some days the pony teaches the lesson instead. 🐴✨

But that’s the magic of it.

A huge thank you to for pouring your heart into every class! If you grew up a horse lover like me and want your kids to have an amazing experience she's your gal!

This is not daycare. It is structured Day Training. 🐾

When I have dogs moving like this, I am not just letting them run around to burn energy.

I am watching how they move, how they respond, how quickly they reconnect, how they follow, and how they check in when excitement is high.

That tells me a lot.

Because real-life training is not only about what a dog can do when everything is quiet.

It is about whether they can still think when they are excited, moving, curious, and in the middle of real life.

In Day Training, dogs get to use their bodies — but they also get structure, guidance, enrichment, and practice.

They are building recall.
Engagement.
Confidence.
Impulse control.
Body awareness.
Connection.

The goal is not just a tired dog.

The goal is a dog who feels clearer, more connected, and more successful when they go home.

That is the difference between chaotic daycare and structured Day Training.

Comment DAY TRAINING and tell me: does your dog need help with energy, focus, confidence, or calm?

7 Things I’m Doing With My Puppy That You Should Be Doing Too

(And yes — these still apply to adult dogs too.)

1️⃣ Cooperative Care
Handling paws, ears, grooming, restraint, vet prep.
➡️ Prevents lifelong stress around handling and vet visits.

2️⃣ Threshold Impulse Control
Waiting calmly at doors, gates, and cars.
➡️ Builds patience instead of chaos and over-arousal.

3️⃣ Crate Training
Teaching the crate as a calm safe place.
➡️ Builds independence and relaxation skills.

4️⃣ Pulling Is Never Practiced
Sniffing is allowed. Pulling never works. Check-ins pay well.
➡️ Dogs repeat behaviors that get reinforced.

5️⃣ Teaching Calmness
Tether training, structured downtime, settling.
➡️ Calm is a trained skill — not just personality.

6️⃣ Turning Natural Behaviors Into Training
Jumping, tunneling, chasing, exploring = training opportunities.
➡️ Work WITH genetics and drive, not against them.

7️⃣ Interactive Play + Obedience Everywhere
Teaching outs, pauses, engagement, recall, side position, and sprinkling obedience into daily life and play.
➡️ Training becomes part of living — not just “sessions.”

✨ Example Puppy Schedule ✨

Monday → Cooperative care + leash work
Tuesday → Crate games + recall
Wednesday → Tether settle practice
Thursday → Loose leash walking
Friday → Trick training + play
Saturday → Socialization outing
Sunday → Decompression/sniff walk

Hazel’s owners are first-time dog owners, and Hazel came to us with very little food drive, low confidence, and not much desire to problem solve or engage in learning — which is actually more common than people think with sensitive puppies. 💜

A huge part of this week has been helping Hazel learn how to learn. We’ve been building confidence through play, engagement, food motivation, potty training, and creating positive experiences around trying new things instead of shutting down or avoiding them.

Hazel is finishing up her One Week Jumpstart Program and will be continuing on in our Day Training Program so we can keep building her confidence, communication skills, and overall ability to navigate the world successfully.

Our goal isn’t just obedience — it’s helping Hazel grow into the best companion dog she can possibly be for her family. 🐾
