Teeter Terror 2.0

At a recent run thru, Fenway careened off the teeter, fell of and scared himself enough to refuse that obstacle again. I could cajole him to place paws on it with a cookie. But Fen was obstinately clear that the teeter spelled danger. His decision was final!

For nearly a decade, Fen barreled over the teeter like a mighty locomotive. Now this! It was the notion that he was afraid of it that bothered me and I couldn’t imagine Fearless Fen vanquished by demons.

The teeter situation was too intriguing not to analyze and retrain. Patience and small steps were required along with tasty cookies.

First lesson: have Fen run over a long, flat contact trainer. “Yippee... aren’t you wonderful’” repeat 5x

Second lesson: have the teeter flat on the ground. There is actually a very slight tipping motion in this position but it’s extremely gentle. Success! Fen didn’t encounter the teeter demons! “What a brave Collie Dog!!! and tons of reward cookies. Repeat about 10x with me on both sides.

Third Lesson: do the above but with me at an increasing distance from Fen. I ended up about 20’ away, cue’ing “Go teeter!” with only a verbal.

Fourth Lesson: raise the teeter to about 12”. Fen was initially wary, so I stayed by his side and cheered on every step with a cookie reward. Luring works. We did this about 10x with me on both sides.

Take a break. Repeat #4 and judge the amount of Fen’s confidence. Since it was high, I added distance and sends. Yay Fennie!

Fifth lesson: Teeter is now full height and I am close. When I saw Fen start to get nervous and flatten his body, I grasped the end of the teeter to gently guide it down. Repeat about 10x until confidence was regained.

Take a break.

Final lesson: Verbal cue “Teeter!” enthusiastically and run alongside. “Yay Fen!” He’s crouching just a tad but I take it as a good sign that he trusts his ability and is careful about tipping the teeter down. Repeat 10x both sides and add handler distance. This is the stage when I used loud enthusiast praise.

This whole series of retraining lessons took only about a half hour. I decided that it was about building SUSTAINED CONFIDENCE, so I wanted to get to the success point in one complete session.

I plan another session that starts with half-height teeter and quickly progresses to full height. This is because I don’t want Fen to fail, go back to being uneasy and regress.

So that’s it! Happy training!
