Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers, but especially mine! 🩷

When I'm in the MOV she often travels with me, taking notes, helping clean, calming horses, and keeping me from talking too much so I can make it to the next place on time! Call me a momma's girl, but we only get so much time with our mom, so I make it a point to drag her everywhere I can with me ❤️

When do horses need dentals? 🦷

The typical answer you'll hear is "yearly", but it is more complex than that. A lot of factors come into play. Here's a summarized breakdown:

-At birth, owners should evaluate the maxilla and mandible (upper and lower jaw) and look for issues such as brachygnathism, prognathism, and wry nose. Depending on severity, veterinary intervention may be necessary.

-At age 2 or before a horse is started, a dental should be performed. Horses with congenital issues may need their first dental at a younger age.

-From age 2-5 (or until all permanent teeth are erupted and in occlusion), a dental should be performed every 6 months.

-From age 5 until teeth start to expire a dental should be performed yearly.

-Geriatric horses should be evaluated every 6 months.

Horses that have not had consistent or quality dental care and horses with malocclusions or other issues may need dentals every 6 months.

We all have our “icks”. Here are some things in the dentistry world that give me the “ick”! 🤢

🤮 Bragging about doing horses quickly - each horse is an individual and not a race.
🤮 Doing large amounts of horses in one day (without assistants) - are they really providing a complete dental, cleaning their tools, and giving spec breaks if they’re getting through 15 + horses per day without help?
🤮 Not cleaning instruments and equipment - biosecurity is no joke.
🤮 Not allowing clients to look or feel in the mouth - what are they hiding?
🤮 Not having geriatrics looked at because "they're already fed a mash." - if the horse still has teeth, they need to be evaluated regularly
🤮 Calling yourself a "certified" or “licensed” equine dental provider when you're not - don’t be a liar. Those of us who have passed the IAED exam or the licensing worked our butts off for it!
🤮 Inverting horses heads - we should be improving horses health, not hurting it.

If you believe that horses need grain in their diet to meet their nutritional needs, you are not alone. However, horses should get most of their nutrients from a good quality forage source such as grass, hay, hay pellets, or a complete feed.

Horses generally eat between 1.5-2% of their body weight each day, so an average size 1,000 lbs horse should eat 15- 20 lbs of hay daily. To help fill any nutrient gaps such as essential vitamins or minerals, a ration balancer may be beneficial. Depending on breed, body condition, and exercise level, concentrates may be added in to provide additional energy but are often not needed.

When deciding on what to feed your horse, it is best to invest in high quality forages as the foundation of your feeding plan. You can even have your hay tested to see exactly what nutrients it is providing.

Please consult with your veterinarian or an equine nutritionist about your horse's diet before making any major changes, and remember that any changes should be made gradually over time to avoid GI upset.

Thank you to the AAEP Horse Owner Education Committee for providing this information.
