My name is Heather, and I am writing this with a heavy heart, but also with a glimmer of hope that I refuse to let go. A year ago, my world shattered when my beloved dog, Whimper, went missing. For 350 agonizing days, I searched, prayed, and refused to give up on her. She earned the name Whimper because she canāt bear to let me out of her sightāshe cries the moment I leave the room. Living through nearly a year without knowing where she was or if she was safe was a pain I wouldn't wish on anyone. Then, a true miracle happened. Whimper came home. She was wearing the exact same collar she had on the day she disappeared.
While the trauma of her missing year runs deep, the absolute brightest light since her return has been her reunion with her brother, Tucker. I was so worried about how she would adjust, but the moment they saw each other, it was like they hadn't skipped a beat. They are already back to having an absolute blast together, playing and running around just like old times. Watching her light up next to Tucker has been a beautiful reminder of the happy dog she used to be.
But beneath those happy moments, Whimper is still dealing with the severe physical and mental aftermath of her ordeal. She returned to me with a deep, painful wound across her spineāan injury she likely suffered while bravely escaping through a fence to find her way back home. Her anxiety right now is through the roof. She flinches if hands move too quickly toward her face, though she trusts me completely and knows she is safe in my arms. Mealtime is heartbreaking; she takes just one or two bites of food before her panic takes over, and she flips her bowls over in fear. Even when we are home together, she is constantly hyper-focused on the front door, panicked that I might disappear again. Her separation anxiety is so intense that she has started chewing right through the wood around the door frame, just trying to stay close to the exit.
While Whimper was fighting to get back to me, I have been fighting my own battles.I am terminally ill, living with End-Stage COPD/emphysema and multiple sclerosis (MS). I have been out of work on disability for the last 5 months, and the financial strain has been overwhelming. A beautiful, anonymous online donor stepped up to cover the immediate costs of her initial emergency vet visit, but Whimperās journey to recovery is just beginning. She requires more rehabilitation to fully heal from her injuries.
I have never been someone to easily ask for help, but I am fighting for my girl. I cannot lose her after a miracle brought her back to me. Every single dollar raised will go directly toward Whimperās ongoing medical care, medications, and the specialized attention she needs to live without pain.
If you cannot donate, please consider sharing our story. Whimper fought for 350 days to come home to Tucker and me, and I will do everything in my power to give her the healing and peace she deserves.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts,
Heather, Whimper, & Tucker š¾
