🐾 What’s in our dogs’ bowls? 🐾

We get asked a lot what we feed here at Kentucky Pawsh Poodles, so here’s what our crew is currently enjoying!

🥣 Base: 4health Salmon & Potato Kibble

🍗 Every meal gets topped with: Northwest Naturals Freeze-Dried Turkey Recipe

✨ Then we rotate healthy whole-food toppers throughout the week:
🫐 Greek yogurt + blueberries
🥚 Farm-fresh eggs
🐟 Sardines

I love adding variety to their diet while keeping their main food consistent. Every topper brings something a little different to the table—from probiotics and antioxidants to healthy fats and high-quality protein. Plus, the dogs get SO excited when it’s mealtime! 😍

No matter what you choose to feed, the goal is the same: healthy dogs that thrive.

One of the biggest misconceptions about Standard Poodles is that they’re delicate, fancy dogs who spend all day trying to keep their feet clean.

Our dogs would respectfully disagree. 😂

Around here you’ll find them…
🌱 Racing through the fields.
🤼 Wrestling each other until everyone is exhausted.
🏃 Chasing each other at full speed.
🐾 Digging holes they definitely weren’t given permission to dig.
🌾 Exploring every inch of the farm.
💙 And then coming inside like they belong on the couch.

People see the beautiful haircut and assume they’re “high maintenance.”

We see athletes.

We see workers.

We see dogs that were originally bred to retrieve waterfowl and still have that drive, intelligence, and desire to work today.

The elegance is just a bonus.

One of my favorite things about Standard Poodles is that they can go from muddy paws and playing like complete goofballs to freshly groomed and absolutely stunning in what feels like the blink of an eye.

Farm dogs.

Family dogs.

Adventure dogs.

Service dog prospects.

Sport dogs.

Couch potatoes.

They truly can do it all.

Maybe that’s why I fell in love with this breed so many years ago.

They aren’t just beautiful.

They’re beautifully versatile.

Meet Java 🐩🤎

When Java came to us, we were her third home.

She was a little skittish, a little unsure, and understandably cautious about whether this place — and these people — were truly going to be permanent.

I remember promising her that she had finally found her forever home.

I’ll admit it was her beauty that first caught my eye. Her color, her petite size, and the elegance that only a Standard Poodle seems to carry so effortlessly.

But it wasn’t long before I realized her beauty was the least remarkable thing about her.

With patience, kindness, and a little time, uncertainty slowly became trust.

And trust became love.

Java has the sweetest, gentlest soul. The kindness in her eyes melts me every single day.

She loves to run and she is FAST — watching her sprint across the field with her ears flying behind her never gets old.

But what amazes me most is her ability to switch from athlete to lady of the house in an instant.

The moment she comes inside, it’s as if she instinctively knows it’s time to settle. She doesn’t need to be in your lap or under your feet every second. She’s perfectly content simply being near her people — usually tucked under the kitchen table or stretched out on the couch quietly keeping watch over her family.

Close enough to be part of everything.

Never in the way.

And then there’s her digging obsession… 😂

If digging were an Olympic sport, Java would be bringing home gold medals. On the bright side, it does keep her nails beautifully maintained, and honestly, I think she would have made an incredible hunting dog with her drive and athleticism.

More than anything though, Java reminds me why I love this breed so much.

Beneath all of the elegance and intelligence is a heart that simply wants to belong to someone.

I’m grateful every day that she chose us back. ❤️

Why did I choose Standard Poodles?

The truth is, I didn’t really choose them. I grew up with them, so I grew up knowing exactly what they were capable of giving to the people who love them.

I grew up with their intelligence, their affection, and their almost unbelievable ability to understand their people without a single word being spoken.

Having a bad day? A Standard Poodle knows.

Need company but don’t want to talk? A Standard Poodle knows.

Need a reason to smile or keep moving forward? Somehow, they know that too.

Their intelligence is rivaled by very few breeds, yet what impresses me most isn’t how smart they are—it’s what they do with that intelligence. They want to be with you. They want to understand you. Most of all, they want to please you.

They make incredible family dogs, but if you’ve ever owned a Standard Poodle, you know they usually choose “their person.” Their bond with that person runs deep, and there is something incredibly special about being loved by a dog that loves so completely.

I also love their versatility. One minute they can look elegant and sophisticated enough for a show ring, and two minutes later they’re running through the pasture, playing on the farm, or roughhousing with the family.

They are athletic, goofy, and playful, but when it’s time to come inside, it’s almost like someone flipped a switch. They settle in beside their people and become part of the home again.

Of course, I’d be lying if I said the low-shedding coat wasn’t a factor too. While grooming is certainly a commitment, it doesn’t have to be overwhelming. One of my favorite things about poodles is that there are so many ways to keep them clipped and maintained to fit your lifestyle.

If I had to describe the breed in three words, they would be:

Class.
Elegance.
Intelligence.

For me, though, what makes this breed truly special isn’t their appearance or even their intelligence.

It’s their heart.

The only other breed I’ve owned that came close to a Standard Poodle in this way was a Staffordshire Terrier. Both breeds have an incredible ability to love their people deeply and unconditionally.

Sometimes dogs are more than pets.

Sometimes they become family.

Sometimes they become the reason you keep going when life gets hard.

That’s why I chose Standard Poodles.
