Paderborn Lippstadt Airport Opens Doors for Pets Escaping New Year's Chaos
PADERBORN, GERMANY — As millions across Germany prepare to celebrate New Year’s Eve 2025 with an estimated 42,000 tonnes of pyrotechnics, Paderborn Lippstadt Airport has officially launched its "Ruhe statt Böller" (Quiet instead of Firecrackers) initiative. Starting tonight, December 31, the regional airport will transform its main terminal into a dedicated sanctuary for noise-sensitive dogs and their owners.
A Sanctuary Amidst the "War Zone"
In a country where private fireworks displays are a deep-rooted tradition, the resulting noise and air pollution often turn the holiday into what animal advocates describe as a "night of horror" for local wildlife and domestic pets. Because German law strictly prohibits fireworks near airport runways and facilities for safety reasons, these locations offer some of the few remaining "silent zones" in the country.
Event Highlights for 2025
The airport has coordinated with local partners to ensure a stress-free experience for its four-legged guests:
Professional Support: Staff from the Hundeschule Delbrück (Delbrück Dog School) will be on-site with a calming program to help manage highly anxious animals.
Amenities: Terminal restaurants and cafes will remain open for owners, and pet supply company Trixie will provide small gifts for all participating animals.
No Barriers: The event is free of charge and does not require advance registration, allowing pet owners to seek shelter spontaneously if their local neighborhood becomes too loud.
A Growing Nationwide Trend
Paderborn is the first to formalize this as a public event, but the trend of "airport camping" is spreading. A spokesperson for Düsseldorf Airport noted it is now common to see families relaxing on terminal benches with their pets as midnight approaches.
For those seeking more formal accommodations, nearby hotels like the Sheraton Frankfurt Airport and Hilton Munich Airport report being fully booked weeks in advance, with many guests checking in specifically for their "no-fireworks" guarantees.
"Numerous dog owners in our region seek a safe place for their animals," said Roland Hüser, Managing Director of Paderborn Lippstadt Airport. "We developed this offer to provide a high-quality retreat entirely without fireworks".
