🎾🐾 PLAY IS TRAINING. And it’s a part we never want to overlook!

Check out Trainer Monica and her Board & Train pup Hank having an all-out play session! 😂💙

It might look like they’re taking a break from training…but there’s actually a LOT happening here.

Intentional play can help build engagement, confidence, trust, motivation, and the relationship between a dog and their handler. For a working breed like Hank, it also gives him an appropriate outlet for all that German Shepherd energy and drive! 💪🐶

And here’s something we really want owners to understand: your dog should WANT to interact with you.

We don’t want the environment to always be more exciting than the person holding the leash. When you learn how to become part of the fun, you become more relevant to your dog—and that can carry right over into training. 👏

There’s a time for structure.
There’s a time for obedience.
And there is ABSOLUTELY a time to get silly, bring out the toy, and PLAY. 🤪🎾

Training shouldn’t take away your dog’s personality or joy.

Build the relationship. Build the engagement. Have FUN with your dog. ❤️

The long weekend has officially arrived, and we hope you and your pups get a chance to relax, adventure, play, and enjoy a little extra time together! ❤️🐶

Whether your plans include the beach, boating, BBQs, traveling, or becoming one with the couch 😂—remember that a busy holiday weekend can mean more people, more dogs, more traffic, and more distractions than usual.

Keep those pups safe, keep those leashes handy, bring plenty of water, and don’t forget that your dog doesn’t have to say hello to everyone they meet. 😉🐾

🚨 DOG OWNERS… LET’S START A LEASH DEBATE. 👀🐾

You’re standing in the pet store staring at a wall of leashes…

Which one are you grabbing?

For everyday training, we’re big fans of a simple, well-made standard leash or slip lead, depending on the dog, handler, and training goal. Long lines are also fantastic when we’re working on things like recall and giving a dog more freedom while maintaining control.

And retractable leashes? 👀

They have their uses, but they’re generally not our first choice for training. The constantly changing leash length and tension can make clear leash communication and consistent boundaries harder—and they can create safety issues when dogs get too much distance in the wrong environment.

But here’s the important part:

A leash is a TOOL. The right choice depends on the dog, the handler, the environment, and what you’re trying to accomplish.

Anything to keep them from losing their minds at the person who is literally just trying to leave your Amazon package and escape. 😂📦

And hey… distracting them might get you through the moment. But what if you could actually teach your dogs what you WANT them to do when someone comes to the door?

Instead of chaos → yelling → barking → interpretive dance… 😂

We can work toward:

🐾 Doorbell rings
🐾 Dog goes to Place
🐾 Holds position
🐾 Delivery driver does their thing
🐾 Everyone keeps their sanity

Training gives you another option besides becoming your dog’s personal entertainment system every time FedEx arrives. 🤣

We’re halfway through the week and some of us are READY to call it a day…

Meanwhile, your dog is outside like:

“Hold on. I have 37 peemails to check.” 📬🐶🤣

You’re standing at the door ready to go inside while they’re sniffing the SAME patch of grass for the 14th time like it contains classified information.

👃 “Hmm… Bruno was here.”
👃 “Ohhhh, Bella replied.”
👃 “WAIT. Who’s this new guy?!” 😂

And don’t even THINK about rushing them. They have neighborhood business to attend to!

Sometimes you just have to let them check their pee-mail, scroll the neighborhood newsfeed, and catch up on all the latest gossip. 🤣🌱

Training isn’t always commands, distractions, and putting in reps.

Sometimes the best thing you can do for a dog is simply let them decompress.

Here are two of our trainers with their Board & Train pups taking some time to slow things down, enjoy the moment, and just… be dogs. 🐶🌿

Decompression is an important part of the process. Training requires a lot of mental work, especially when dogs are learning new skills, experiencing new environments, and processing new information.

They need downtime too!

No pressure.
No big expectations.
Just sniffing, relaxing, exploring, and enjoying some time with their trainers. ❤️

And let’s be real… our trainers need it just as much sometimes. 🤣

Work hard. Play hard. Decompress harder. 😉

A balanced training journey includes knowing when to work and when to simply let your dog breathe.

Looks like this crew understood the assignment. 🐾

🐾🔥 FIVE MONTHS OLD & CRUSHING IT! 🔥🐾

Check out Trainer Jen and her adorable 5-month-old Coton de Tulear/Poodle mix putting those puppy brains to WORK! 🧠🐶👏

At five months old, the world is basically one giant distraction. 😂

What’s that smell?!
Who’s that person?!
Was that a leaf?!
WAIT… A BIRD! 👀🤣

That’s why building a strong foundation early is SO valuable.

Trainer Jen is keeping things short, fun, engaging, and rewarding while teaching clear communication and helping this little pup understand exactly what’s being asked.

And judging by this reel… things are CLICKING! 👏👏

Puppies don’t need perfection. They need consistency, patience, repetition, plenty of rewards—and training that makes them excited to come back for more.

🛒 Shopping carts rolling by
👥 People everywhere
📢 Store noises
👃 About 7,000 interesting smells
👀 Movement in every direction

And Hank?

“Cool. But Monica… where’s my paycheck?” 😂🦴

THAT is engagement.

Hank is learning that even when the environment is busy and full of distractions, his handler is still the most important thing in the room.

And if you know German Shepherds, you know these dogs LOVE having a job. Give that brain some direction, clear communication, and a reward worth working for, and they are ready to clock in! 🧠💪🐶

This is why we take training into the real world. Commands at home are great—but we want those skills to hold up when life is happening all around them.

🐾 MEET POPPY! 💕🧠

Poppy is an almost 2-year-old Australian Labradoodle, and she’s teaming up with Trainer Monica!

And we’ve already figured something out about Miss Poppy…

She’s SMART. Like… maybe a little TOO smart. 😂

You know the type—the dog who learns what you’re teaching…and then immediately starts figuring out the loopholes. 👀🤣

Smart dogs are incredibly fun to train, but that brain needs direction, consistency, boundaries, and plenty of appropriate challenges. Otherwise, they’re pretty good at inventing their own entertainment…and their own rules. 😉

Trainer Monica will be putting that big brain to work while building better communication, manners, reliability, and engagement.

Because we don’t want to take away that intelligence or personality—we want to teach Poppy how to use those superpowers for good. 😂💪🐶
