Before the Labrador ever set paw on an English shooting estate, it arrived on the salt-worn docks of Dorset. 🌊 In the early 1800s, ships trading cod between Newfoundland and the port of Poole carried more than fish in their holds. They carried small, hardy black water dogs that had spent generations hauling nets and lines in the frigid North Atlantic.

English sportsmen who watched these dogs work were amazed by their drive and their love of the water. 🐾 Local gentry along the south coast began buying them straight off the boats, and those humble dockside retrievers became the foundation of everything we now call the Labrador.

It is a strange and wonderful thought that a breed so tied to grand country houses actually began on a working waterfront, smelling of brine and rope. The dog dozing by your fire is descended from sailors' companions who earned their keep in the cold.

I always think about how much history is folded into that steady, willing temperament. If your Lab has ever been impossible to keep out of the water, now you know where that pull comes from.
