Mary is training Gemini to wait at doorways!

By saying “wait” and tossing treats behind Gemini, Mary encourages him to turn away from the doorway. As he begins to pause on his own, she uses a clicker to mark the behavior and rewards him.

Notice that Mary isn't blocking the doorway. Gemini is choosing to wait on his own!

Once it's time to move through, Mary uses his release cue, “all done.”

Practice in both directions and at 15–30 different doorways! This helps your dog learn that “wait” applies to different doorways, not just the one where they first learned it.

Coco is a very fearful Poodle mix that Mary is helping learn to be more comfortable and confident.

When there are sudden loud noises or when people move too fast, Coco gets scared and tries to run away. We have been working on recall so that she learns to come back inside where it is safe rather than continue to run away.

We have also been working on her fear of the leash and helping her build a healthy curiosity about the world around her.

She has built up enough trust with Mary to lie down near her, which is big progress for Coco!

Help Chucho find his new home!

Chucho is a smart, active guy who loves learning, training, playing, and spending time with people.

He has already completed Adult Manners and Agility for Fun with us and really enjoys positive reinforcement training. With his energy and love of learning, he would be a great match for someone interested in continuing his training or exploring dog sports with him.

Chucho can be anxious and reactive around other dogs on leash. His current family is hoping to find him a home with a large, securely fenced yard or country setting, where he has more options for exercise without relying solely on neighborhood walks.

Finding the right home for Chucho is incredibly important to his family. He needs an experienced owner who understands working breeds and can give him the space, activity, training, and companionship he needs.

Halloween is almost here! Is your dog ready for spooky season?

Costumes, decorations, and all the changes around the neighborhood can be challenging for some dogs.

If your dog doesn’t enjoy dressing up, skip the costume and try a festive collar, bandana, or bow tie instead.

As decorations start popping up, watch your dog’s body language and give them space from anything that makes them uncomfortable. Never force them to approach something they’re afraid of.

You can also start introducing decorations slowly and positively now to help build their confidence before Halloween!

Training with food won’t automatically make your dog gain weight, and it won’t spoil them.

Food is a great way to teach new behaviors, reinforce the behaviors you want to see, and make training rewarding for your dog.

The key is balance. Training treats should be considered part of your dog’s overall daily food intake, not simply added on top of it. Keep treats small, use part of their regular meals for training, and save higher-value foods for more challenging situations.

Think of food as your dog’s paycheck. Easier work might earn kibble, while harder work around distractions may call for something more valuable, like cheese or boiled chicken.

Food is communication. It helps your dog understand what worked and makes them more likely to repeat that behavior in the future.

Fetch is a great way to have fun with your dog, but it’s important not to overdo it!

In the video, you can see Smoke learning how to play fetch! Mary asks Smoke to sit before throwing the ball, then practices “drop it” when Smoke brings the ball back before the next throw.

Too much fetch can lead to overarousal, overheating, and stress on your dog’s joints. Some dogs can also become so focused on the ball that it’s hard for them to relax when the game is over.

Mix things up by adding simple cues like “sit” before the throw or “drop it” before the next toss. This helps keep your dog thinking, not just chasing.

And don’t forget to take breaks! Giving your dog time to rest, cool down, and grab a drink can make for a safer and more enjoyable game of fetch.
