Celebrating my 5th year on Facebook. Thank you for your continuing support. I could never have made it without you. 🙏🤗🎉

AI story, real facts. Three rows of giant gooseneck barnacles, sweeping like oars down her sides and spine. 🐋 But they weren't rowing: every stroke is a barnacle kicking food into its mouth with six pairs of feathery legs. A humpback can carry up to a thousand pounds of barnacles. Did it look like rowing to you, or feeding?

A hundred red-eyed tree frogs, riding on a humpback whale. 🐸🐋 No frog lives in the open ocean: frog skin lets water pass right through, so salty sea water is a real problem for them. Most frogs don't even drink with their mouths. They soak up water through a patch of belly skin. What is the strangest thing you have seen riding a whale?

AI story, real facts. She swam right up to our boat and blew a ring of bubbles around our glove. 🐋 In one study, humpbacks blew 39 rings near people in 12 encounters, and space scientists are studying them. Humpbacks also blow spiral bubble nets that work like tools. If a whale blew a ring at you, what would you do?

AI story, real facts. Something on her chin kept changing shape: a flatfish, a lionfish, a sea snake, a jellyfish. 🐋 It was a mimic octopus, discovered only in 1998, and it can copy up to 18 sea animals. When we reached for it, it wrapped around our glove and tasted it with its suckers. Which disguise surprised you most?

She was wrapped in a fishing net, and she may be one of the rarest whales on Earth. 🐋 Arabian Sea humpbacks never migrate, sing a song heard nowhere else, and have lived apart from other humpbacks for about 70,000 years. Fewer than 100 may be left, and last month scientists said they may be a new subspecies. Had you ever heard of them?

Sea bunny riding on whale's head. 🐋 It is really a sea slug: its "ears" smell the water, its "fur" is made of tiny rods, and its fluffy "tail" is its gills. Real ones are less than an inch long and live on reefs, not whales. Cute or creepy?

Three orcas were circling a baby seal, and then a humpback burst up and lifted it onto her chest. 🐋 This really happens: in a NOAA-led study of 115 humpback and orca clashes, nearly 9 in 10 were over other species, and a scientist once photographed a humpback holding a seal on its chest. Was it kindness or instinct?

Two giant barnacles were locked together on her chin, one pushing its head into the other. 🐋 In the wild, gooseneck barnacles really do grow on top of whale barnacles, up to fifty on one shell. And whale barnacle shells grow in layers that record a whale's journey, like tree rings. What would you name these two?

AI story, real facts. Five giant barnacles in a zig-zag, and a sea urchin wedged between them. 🐋 Stalked barnacles really do ride humpbacks, though real ones are finger sized. Sea urchins have no eyes, yet their whole body may work like one big eye, and red ones can live over 100 years. Which would you have removed first: the barnacles or the urchin?
