This is what rescue is all aboutโฆ๐ helping even when itโs hard to do so!!๐ฌ
โจOUR DOORS ARE TEMPORARILY CLOSED โจ
On Friday we were contacted by another rescue asking if we could help with a litter of โ6 week oldโ puppies that were being given away on Facebook.
Did we have the room? No.
Did we have the funds? Absolutely not.
But after hearing the position these babies were in, there was no way we were walking away.
So the very next day, we said yes to 9 puppies.
The moment we arrived, we knew something was wrong. At first we thought there is absolutely no chance these puppies are 6 weeks old. They are tiny, bloated, underdeveloped and barely the size of healthy 4 week old pups.
But the deeper we dug, the worse the situation became.
The father dog was adopted through a โrescueโ that failed to desex him before adopting him out. His adopters reportedly reached out multiple times asking for help and guidance, but their messages were ignored.
Then thereโs mum.
An undesexed female dog left roaming the streets until she jumped a fence and ended up tied with the undesexed male. When her owners were finally located, their response was:
โNow sheโs pregnant, you can keep the bi$ .โ
Let that sink in.
This poor girl had back to back litters with absolutely no accountability from the people responsible for her. Her body is exhausted. She is depleted, neglected, and in desperate need of medical care herself.
Heartbreakingly, mum gave up feeding and caring for the puppies when they were only around 2.5 weeks old. The owners of the father dog were left with no choice but to step in, bottle feed these babies around the clock, and fight to keep them alive.
The reality is, they didnโt have to take mum on at all, but they did. They could have turned a blind eye like so many others do, but instead they tried to keep these puppies alive with the limited support and knowledge they had. Our only regret is that help wasnโt reached out for sooner, because no one should have been left trying to manage a situation this overwhelming alone.
This is the reality of rescue.
Not โoops litters.โ
Not harmless mistakes.
Not people โdoing their best.โ
This is what happens when people refuse to desex their animals, dump responsibility onto rescues or other people, and treat living beings as disposable the second things become inconvenient..
Now 9 vulnerable puppies are in rescue care needing around the clock support, food, parasite treatment, vaccinations, vet care, warmth, and safety.
We are beyond full.
We are financially exhausted.
We are physically and emotionally exhausted too.
However we will never turn our backs on animals who didnโt ask to be born into this mess.
Mum has also been saved by the amazing team at Bull Arab Rescue Australia Ltd and is receiving medical treatment and once healthy enough will be desexed to end this cycle for good.
