Libby Lou's Safe Haven

Libby Lou's Safe Haven We are a 501(c)3 vegan microsanctuary for cows and friends. After my parents passed away, I was emotionally lost. To thank her, I founded Libby Lou's Safe Haven!

I had tremendous support from friends and family but my first cow, Libby Lou, healed a part of my soul that no human could touch. We are a microsanctuary for cows and friends, striving to become a resource for our community to help those who have been abused, neglected, have special needs or uncertain futures. We also invite conversations about compassion. We are open by appointment only! Sundays

only. 11:00am-2:00pm

We cannot accommodate drop-in visitors. We kindly request a suggested donation of $50 per adult and $25 per child. This is just a suggestion, not a fee. Please see our website for more info on visiting. http://libbyloussafehaven.com

Libby Lou’s has news! We are soon to be on the move!

Between living in an area of extreme fire danger and the high cost of life in San Diego, I’ve been stressing out for a while. I just don’t think it’s substantial long-term. I want the sanctuary to thrive, not just survive. Seems like we’ve been doing a lot of surviving and not much thriving.

I found us 7 acres of flat useable pasture about an hour south of Sequoia National Park. It even has irrigation! That means I might could grow our own hay and at least partially offset the monthly hay bill. This could be a game changer for us! Lower fire risk too. The property also has a pond with some benches and a gazebo! With some TLC, this property has potential to be amazing for both the animals and guests!

San Diego will always be home and leaving was not part of my plan but the animals must come first.

Update: What a difference from yesterday! Just got word the evacuation warning has been lifted and the Border 6 fire is now 25% contained. Have been watching the stream of bulldozers, water tankers and firetrucks go down our road…These brave folks are amazing and we are so grateful! Thank you for keeping us safe! 🙏🐮🫏🐓🦮🐱

Just wanted to give an update…The Border 6 fire in our area was at 700 acres US side, 520 acres Mexico side as of last night. Waiting on AM update from Cal Fire. We’ve been under an evac warning since yesterday. The kind folks who volunteer to help evacuate large animals are on stand-by. Praying that is not needed!
Photo is yesterday’s view from my kitchen window.

This past weekend was the busiest Libby Lou’s has ever been! In addition to the kids coming out on Saturday, we also had two birthday tours, one on Friday and the other on Sunday. I swear I don’t think the donkeys have ever looked this well groomed! 😄🫏

The animals got so much extra attention and I feel really good about all the education I was able to do. Thank you all for your visits, for donating and for caring about farm animals. 🩷

🐴 A HISTORIC DAY FOR HORSES 🐴

After decades of operation, Canada’s largest horse slaughterhouse — Bouvry Exports in Fort Macleod, Alberta — has officially closed its doors for good.

This was the facility where thousands of horses each year drew their final breath: retired racehorses, faithful ranch and trail companions, family pets sold at auction, and wild mustangs. Many shipped across the border from the United States, held in feedlots, then slaughtered for the horse meat markets in Japan and Europe.

For years, brave activists, undercover investigators, journalists, and everyday horse lovers refused to stay silent. They documented the suffering, held protests, gathered petitions, and kept the pressure on. Today, that tireless work has delivered a real victory. 💔🤍

The Canadian Horse Defence Coalition has confirmed: Bouvry Exports is permanently closed and no longer accepting horses for slaughter.

This moment belongs to every person who has ever gazed into a horse’s eyes and seen a soul staring back. To the rescue groups who outbid kill buyers at auctions. To the volunteers who stood in freezing weather with signs. To the investigators who never looked away.
But the fight is far from over. 🐴

Horse slaughter continues at Viande Richelieu in Quebec. Live horse exports to Japan by plane still happen. And there are real concerns that slaughter operations could expand elsewhere to fill the gap.

So today we celebrate this hard-won victory.
Tomorrow we keep fighting — until every horse is allowed to live out its days in peace.
Every horse deserves a pasture, not a slaughterhouse. 🤍

What an amazing afternoon yesterday! We welcomed three families to Libby Lou’s for a tour. I tailored it around the kids, we stayed outside the pens and let the animals greet us safely. I did take them in to meet Regan because she is bombproof. I made up some index cards with fun facts about donkeys and cows to share and answered questions. The animals were just magical! Very gentle with the kids and vice versa. At the end, we gave them apples and carrots. I showed the group how to safely feed treats as the technique is a bit different with equines and cows. I think everybody had a great time!! Thank you to the parents for the donations!
