RESCUE MISSION & SURVIVAL STORY 🐾
What started as a normal day quickly turned into a race against time to save two tiny kittens fighting for survival.
A stray mama cat that had been seen wandering the property for weeks secretly gave birth at the top of an abandoned elevator shaft inside a building dating back to the early 1900s originally a polio hospital. The elevator had been out of service since around the 1930s, leaving behind decades of deteriorated wood, rusted metal, debris, and darkness below.
Somehow, the newborn kittens fell all the way down the side of the elevator shaft.
Trapped underneath the elevator in several inches of still water, the babies huddled together on a tiny metal plate trying to survive. They remained trapped there through the evening, overnight, and into the next morning nearly 24 hours alone in the cold darkness.
The rescue mission began immediately.
At first, everyone searched above the elevator shaft while our IT department played mama cat sounds hoping to locate them. We even discussed calling the fire department because we had no safe way to reach underneath the elevator.
Then the landscaper became the hero of the day.
While clearing out old boxes and debris near the bottom of the shaft, he realized the structure underneath was made from weathered, rotting wood. Armed with gloves, determination, and a crowbar provided by the crew, he carefully began breaking through layers of deteriorated wood and thin sheet metal while our maintenance team assisted with flashlights.
Piece by piece, he created an opening just large enough to crawl through.
He climbed underneath the abandoned elevator into the dark, flooded space and finally found the kittens alive. One by one, he carefully pulled them out and brought them to safety.
Against all odds, these tiny babies survived the fall, the cold water, the darkness, and nearly 24 hours trapped beneath an abandoned elevator shaft.
Because of teamwork, determination, and one person refusing to give up, this rescue mission became a survival story with a happy ending. 🖤
