đž LEASH WALKING: ITâS ABOUT MORE THAN JUST NOT PULLING! đž
Does your dog walk you instead of the other way around? đ Does every squirrel, person, or interesting smell turn your peaceful walk into a full-body workout?
First, take a breath. Youâre not failing, and your dog isnât giving you a hard time. Leash walking is a skill that has to be taught, practiced, and built over time!
Here are a few things that can help:
đž Start small. You donât have to master walking around the neighborhood on day one. Start in your house, driveway, or yard.
đž Reward what you like. When your dog checks in with you, walks beside you, or keeps the leash loose, let them know theyâre doing a great job!
đž Be consistent. If pulling gets your dog where they want to go, theyâll keep trying it. Practice teaching your dog that a loose leash is what moves the walk forward.
đž Give them room to learn. If your dog is overwhelmed by other dogs, people, or distractions, create some distance. Itâs much easier to learn when theyâre able to think instead of react.
đž Remember that progress isnât always a straight line. Some days will be better than others, and thatâs okay! A few minutes of productive practice can be more valuable than a long, frustrating walk.
And please remember: your walks donât have to look perfect to be successful. â¤ď¸
