LEPTO VACCINE FOR DOGS: DOES YOUR DOG REALLY NEED IT?
I don’t think every dog automatically needs the Lepto vaccine every year, but I also don’t want your dog getting Lepto. Both can be true. It spreads through contaminated water and soil, often from raccoons and rats, and can affect the kidneys and people too.
The historical case rate is about 6 to 37 per 100,000 dogs, and the vaccine has limits:
🐾 Only 4 serovars covered, while about 10 are clinically relevant, so protection isn’t guaranteed.
🐾 Traditionally linked with more reactions (injection site, fever, muscle pain), partly because it’s a bacterial vaccine, which is harder to get strong protection from than a viral one like parvo.
🐾 Yearly boosters repeatedly ask the immune system to respond, and vaccines contain adjuvants to boost that response. That can cause side effects, and in my opinion repeated stimulation may contribute to chronic inflammation, immune problems, or organ stress in some dogs. It doesn’t mean vaccines cause every health problem, but I don’t take it lightly.
I’d consider it for a young, active dog (5 or younger) where Lepto is common, who swims in ponds, runs through woods, gets cuts, or meets rats and raccoons, especially with flooding or heavy rain. I’d question it for mostly indoor or older dogs on dry paths. My little Tula wouldn’t have received it where we lived.
Ask your vet: Are you seeing Lepto cases here? Which serovars are common? What reactions do you see? Do I need yearly boosters?
Many dogs respond well to doxycycline when caught early. Watch for drinking more but urinating less, lethargy, or abnormal kidney values.
Vaccines are one tool, not the whole toolbox. I’d also focus on better food (avoiding dry, carb-loaded kibble when possible), exercise, enrichment, thoughtful supplements, knowing which diseases are in your area, and avoiding unnecessary immune stimulation. My approach: vaccinate less, with fewer things, less often, but thoughtfully.
