Early exposure matters.

Tonight, we took Vanguard Dobermans’ Rev downtown to Salisbury for Third Friday to experience the sights, sounds, people, and activity of a busy downtown environment.

The goal isn’t just to teach a puppy commands. It’s to help build confidence, teach them how to navigate new environments, and learn to stay engaged with their handler when the world around them gets exciting.

These early experiences help lay the foundation for the dog they’ll become. We want puppies learning how to handle real life, not just perform in a familiar training environment.

Teaching a dog a skill is one thing. Building reliability in that skill is another.

Here we are working scent detection in public, proofing and maintaining these dogs’ ability to perform regardless of what’s happening around them.

Whether it’s obedience, scent work, or any performance sport, the goal is the same: not just knowing the behavior, but being able to perform it in different environments, around distractions, and when it matters.

One thing I want dog owners to understand is that training doesn’t end when your dog finally gets it right.

Can your dog perform when people are walking by? When new smells are everywhere? When the environment is unfamiliar?

That’s where proofing and maintenance come in.

Here we are working scent detection in public, asking these dogs to stay committed to the task while the world keeps moving around them.

The same principle applies to obedience, agility, tracking, and any other dog sport. We don’t just train for the moment when everything is easy. We train for consistency when the environment gets challenging.
