TRAINING HAS TO WORK IN THE REAL WORLD.

Today is this dog’s first day of training, and I brought him out to Home Depot because getting that real-world exposure is important.

A dog can do great in a quiet training environment, but that doesn’t mean they’re going to know how to behave when you take them out into the real world. They have to learn how to listen and respond around distractions, new people, new places and everything else that comes with everyday life.

From the start today, this dog would not take a treat. He’s in a new environment and food just wasn’t important to him at that moment.

That’s where being able to communicate with your dog becomes important.

Using leash pressure, I can clearly communicate what I’m asking for. Once the dog gives me the behavior I’m looking for, I release that pressure. That release is part of the reward. I can also reinforce the behavior with praise, affection and petting.

This is one of the reasons I believe in balanced training. You can’t always depend on a treat being the answer. You need to be able to communicate with your dog in different ways depending on the situation and the dog in front of you.

The goal isn’t just to teach a dog how to sit in a training room.

The goal is to teach them how to listen, think and make good decisions out in the real world.

This was a special moment for my 5-year-old son at a Back-to-School event, where kids had the opportunity to compete in a talent show.

He stepped up in front of everyone and demonstrated his training skills with Rio, the German Shepherd puppy who has been part of our Jumpstart Plus Program.

For me, this is about so much more than dog training. It’s about instilling confidence in our youth at a young age—teaching them to step up, communicate, lead, and believe in themselves.

I want my children to know that you don’t have to be the biggest, oldest, or most experienced person in the room to make an impact.

Most people think puppy training is about teaching commands.

It’s not.

A puppy is born knowing how to be a dog—not how to live in our world. Left on their own, they’ll do what comes naturally: pull on the leash, jump on people, chase distractions, bark, mouth, and react to everything around them.

Our job isn’t to punish a puppy for acting like a puppy.

Our job is to teach them how to respond instead of react.

There’s a big difference.

A reaction is driven by instinct and emotion. A response is a learned behavior built through communication, guidance, repetition, and fair accountability.

That’s why puppyhood matters so much.

The habits you allow today become the behaviors you live with tomorrow.

At K9 Legend, we don’t just teach “sit” and “down.” We teach puppies how to think through pressure, ignore distractions, respect boundaries, and make good decisions in the real world.

The best time to build a great dog is while they’re still a puppy.

That’s why we take our puppies into the real world—places like Home Depot. They’re learning that no matter where they are, who’s around, or what’s happening, they can stay calm, engaged, and connected to their handler.

As owners, we don’t just want our dogs to listen in the living room with immediate family. We want them to listen in public, around strangers, shopping carts, loud noises, kids, and everyday distractions. That’s the difference between training for obedience and training for real life.
