Another situation came up this week in Whitehall, where the police called in an Animal Control Officer to assist with the removal of several cats from an unsafe situation. These cats needed somewhere to go immediately but finding that space proved incredibly difficult.

From what we understand, the ACO contacted rescue after rescue, searching for help. Unfortunately, local organizations were already full, including Salem's Community Cats. We were unable to help because we are completely maxed out ourselves. We understand that a Vermont rescue was scrambling to see if they could make room.

This raises the question: How have we reached a point where we are looking across state lines for space for cats who need emergency placement right here in Washington County?

And this isn't the first time. Similar situations have been occurring repeatedly, and they highlight a growing need.

At Salem's Community Cats, we are a small, volunteer-run nonprofit. We started primarily as a TNR and spay/neuter assistance program, working to prevent unwanted litters and reduce the number of homeless cats in our communities. As the need has grown, we have expanded our fostering and adoption efforts as much as our resources allow.

But we have reached our limit.

Our foster homes are full, our volunteers are ready for a break, and kittens are still living outdoors. They need to come inside before winter sets in. We need space for them, but we just don't have it right now.

We know other local rescues and animal welfare volunteers are facing the same challenges. These are people who give their time, open their homes, pay out of pocket when necessary, and work tirelessly to help animals. Most of us also have full-time jobs, families, and other responsibilities. We do this because we care, but we cannot keep stretching already limited resources indefinitely.

We need to start having a conversation about what Washington County can do to address this problem. Whether that means a shelter, designated emergency space within municipalities, or another collaborative solution, there needs to be a plan for animals who must be removed from unsafe situations.

Local rescue organizations can be valuable partners in that effort, but small nonprofits staffed entirely by volunteers cannot be the entire safety net for a growing countywide problem.

As winter approaches, the need becomes even more urgent. We need additional foster homes and donations to help us continue our work, and we know other organizations need that support, too. If you have room in your home to foster, please reach out. If you can make a donation, every dollar helps us care for the cats already depending on us.

But we also need our community leaders to recognize the bigger picture and work with animal welfare organizations toward a sustainable solution.

These cats are our community's responsibility. We need to work together to make sure there is somewhere for them to turn when they need help. ❤️🐱

If you have thoughts on how our county and municipalities could better address this need, we welcome a respectful conversation. It's time to start looking at solutions together.

🚗The Granville TNR Project needs transport volunteers!

Want to make a real difference for cats in your own community? Here's an easy way to help!

Granville TNR is looking for volunteers in the Granville area who can help transport cats to spay/neuter appointments in Hudson Falls and Queensbury.

We know that not everyone has a car or the ability to drive, and we don't want transportation to be the reason a cat goes unfixed. ❤️

Through Granville TNR, we help people who can't afford the cost of spaying or neutering their cats by covering the expense. We also do our best to help arrange transportation when needed. But to make that possible, we need more volunteer drivers!

🐱 What would you be doing?
Simply helping get cats from Granville to their spay/neuter appointments in Hudson Falls or Queensbury, and helping get them where they need to go afterward.

You don't have to be a cat expert or make a huge time commitment. Just a little of your time and a willingness to help can make a BIG difference in the lives of cats and the people who care for them.

Every cat that gets fixed means fewer unwanted litters, less suffering, and a healthier community for everyone. ❤️

📣 Can you help? If you're in the Granville area and can occasionally give a cat a ride, please contact The Granville TNR Project or Dee Scarlotta! And even if you can't volunteer yourself, sharing this post could help us find someone who can.

Together, we can make sure that lack of transportation doesn't stand in the way of getting cats the care they need. 🐾

🚨 Fosters Needed! The temperatures are dropping, and the calls for help keep coming. We have kittens waiting to come into Salem’s Community Cats’ care, but right now, but we have no available foster homes. 💔

The kittens pictured here are just one example of the cats who need a chance. This little group suddenly appeared at a local barn. We don’t know where they came from, but we do know they deserve the opportunity for a safer, warmer life.

The photos show the reality of life for cats living outdoors. The barn provides some shelter, and caring people are looking after the cats, but it’s still an unpredictable environment. The sooner we can get these kittens indoors and begin their socialization, the better their chances of growing into happy, confident cats who can enjoy great lives in loving homes

These kittens aren't the only ones waiting for help. There are others who need a safe place to land, too. And without foster homes, our ability to help them is limited no matter how badly they need us.

Fostering is one of the most direct ways you can help save a life. You provide a temporary home and love; SCC provides foster supplies and covers veterinary expenses. We’ll be there to support you along the way.

You don't have to foster forever to change a cat's future. You just have to be willing to help them take the next step.

If you’ve ever thought about fostering, please consider taking that step. If you can’t foster right now, sharing this post could help us reach someone who can.

Every foster home opens a door for a cat or kitten who otherwise has nowhere to go. Apply at salemscats.com/volunteer

He's a lover! Sweet Willie is a very energetic 6-month-old adolescent in the market for a family to call his own.

Willie would do well in a household where he'd get lots of attention and have interactions that would offer plenty of opportunities for play.

Willie is neutered and up to date with vaccinations. Apply at salemscats.com/adoptions
