🌈💔 Our Hearts Are Broken. Rest in Peace, Beautiful Athena. 🐴❤️

Four years ago, Halo’s Haven rescued Athena from a horrific slaughter pen in North Carolina. She had endured unimaginable abuse and neglect. We promised her she would never suffer again and that she would always know love, kindness, and safety.

Today, our hearts shattered. While Ava and I were away touring law schools, Athena began showing signs of colic. Dr. Harris from Choptank Equine came to her aid, but tragically, Athena had suffered a severe intestinal twist and was in tremendous pain. The heartbreaking decision was made to humanely let her go.

Being so far away made this nightmare even more devastating.

We are deeply grateful to Billy, Chelsea, Nancy, and Dr. Harris for being there when we couldn’t, for comforting Athena, and for making sure she was surrounded by compassion in her final moments.

We couldn’t save Athena today, but we gave her four beautiful years of knowing what it meant to be loved.

She was never just another rescue. She was family.

Run free, beautiful girl. No more pain, no more suffering. Just endless green pastures. You were loved beyond words, and you will be missed beyond measure.

🐴🇺🇸 SPARTAN’S BILL 2027 — WORKING WITH SENATOR JOHNNY MAUTZ TO CHANGE MARYLAND LAW!

What happened to Spartan and the herd left behind at Naylor Farm in Dorchester County should NEVER happen again.

The system failed these horses. Serious questions remain about the veterinary response, the investigation, and why animals were left on the property despite documented evidence of severe neglect.

Spartan’s Bill is about accountability, responsibility, and CHANGE.

Working with Senator Johnny Mautz, Halo’s Haven Rescue is pushing for legislation establishing mandatory protocols and a documented checklist whenever authorities investigate animal neglect.

We want qualified veterinarians evaluating the animals, mandatory documentation of every animal on the property, clear standards for emergency intervention and seizure, required follow-up inspections, and accountability when authorities fail to act.

There should NEVER be another situation where animals continue suffering because agencies failed to follow proper procedures.

Spartan was fortunate enough to be rescued, but WHAT ABOUT THE HERD LEFT BEHIND? WHERE IS THEIR JUSTICE?

Our goal is to make Maryland a model for animal welfare reform and inspire similar protections nationwide.

We are grateful to Senator Johnny Mautz for stepping forward and working with us toward introducing Spartan’s Bill in the 2027 Maryland legislative session.

Spartan came to us May 20th from a horrific neglect case in Dorchester County.

Trust doesn’t come back overnight.
It’s earned—one quiet moment at a time.

And Spartan is learning to trust again. ❤️

He’s a good boy. He’s always been a good boy.

But the horses he knew—the herd he left behind—are still there.

Please don’t forget them. Be their voice. 🐴

🏇❤️ Brooklyn Strong — from racehorse to pleasure horse.

After a very successful racing career, including being a contender in the Kentucky Derby, Brooklyn is learning that life can slow down a little. Today was dental day! He has a significant overbite, known as a parrot mouth, which means his teeth will need regular maintenance to keep him comfortable.

He’s still a little nervous about this whole new world, but he’s in good hands. Give Jazz a little time, and Brooklyn will be quiet as a church mouse. 🐭❤️

A new career. A softer life. And a very well-deserved second chapter. 🐴✨

Charlotte is showing everyone supporting HeeHaw’s family just how kind and gentle a donkey can be. ❤️ Look at her reaching out to Ava, simply saying hello to everyone in the barn.

Ava didn’t need a gun. She offered Charlotte kindness, patience, and respect. What happened to HeeHaw was a heartbreaking and senseless tragedy. No animal peacefully standing in its own paddock should have met that fate. 🫏💔
