May is Mental Health Awareness Month. For too long, many have struggled silently with their mental health. Often, we hear how being with our horses has changed their outlook on life and helped them through some of the most difficult times. We see it every day at Sunrise Horse Rescue. People come to volunteer, join a program we are hosting, or simply visit, and they share stories about how integral horses have been in their lives. Horse rescue is our primary goal, but watching humans be rehabilitated by our herd is something you can't quite put into words.

As May comes to a close and we near the end of our Horses for Mental Health Campaign, we thank you for everything you have contributed.

Save the date! Next Saturday May 23rd we will be at the Ag Fair from 2-6pm at the Calisotga Fairgrounds. The Ag Fair & Tractor Show, including the results from the Calistoga Wine Competition, runs from 2:00 to 6:00 PM, followed by the exciting Tractor & Truck Pulls from 6:00 to 10:00 PM.This free, family-friendly event showcases the best of our region’s farming, food, and wine through interactive exhibits, local vendors, and hands-on experiences for all ages.

Enjoy live entertainment, delicious local food, wine and beer tastings, and the exciting return of the Tractor Show and Truck Pulls. Kids can explore the Free Kids Zone.

At Sunrise Horse Rescue, we witness something extraordinary every day. Horses who have experienced harm, neglect, or trauma at the hands of humans often become the very ones who help humans heal. This is not just an idea. It is a powerful proven cycle of mutual healing that sits at the heart of our work.

Many of the horses who come to us arrive frightened and shut down. They carry the weight of all they have been through. With patient and consistent care, proper nutrition, veterinary support, and compassionate handling, they begin to recover. Trust returns slowly. They soften. They reconnect. In time, many of these same horses become steady healing companions for people who are also carrying pain, or are simply in need of connection and a place to experience peace.

People turn to Sunrise Horse Rescue seeking connection, stability, and a place where they feel safe and accepted. They often come with grief, anxiety, trauma, and depression. As they interact with horses who are healing alongside them, they offer presence, patience, and compassion. In return the horses meet them exactly as they are. Without judgment. Without expectation. In that space trust is rebuilt, confidence grows, and emotional balance begins to return.

Today the need in our community is growing faster than our ability to meet it. More people are seeking meaningful mental health support and more horses need rescue and rehabilitation. At the same time we remain fully committed to the horses already in our care. Each one depends on us every day for feed, veterinary care, shelter, and the consistency that allows healing to continue.

We are seeking support to sustain and grow this work. Your investment will help us rescue and rehabilitate more horses, provide ongoing care for those already in our program, and expand access to equine assisted services for people who need a place to heal. It gives horses who have been neglected or abandoned a second chance not only to recover but to help others do the same. It gives people a place to land when they need it most.

You might remember these 3. Omega, Alice, and Fairy were part of the Napa 5 we rescued last fall. They have been doing incredibly well at Sunrise Horse Rescue. Most days, you will find Fairy and Alice grooming each other and Omega sunbathing in her paddock. It is beautiful to watch these 3 settle more and more into their home at Sunrise Horse Rescue! 💗
