Team BCPH had a great weekend at the August Cow Town Classic. The show was full of great competitors and all the placings truly had to be earned. Blake had the JR horses ready to step up and get some great cow runs done. The Amateurs all met personal best scores and continue to improve and challenge themselves. We couldn't be prouder of our team! A HUGE thank you to Emily and Grace for all their behind the scenes help (and Banjo for being the top aisle lookout 🐶)! It takes a team of people to get this done and we think ours is pretty top notch!

Malichi more than held his own at a very competitive show full of firsts. This young stud has proven he can dominate a cow with a 71 in the cutting and a 73 in the cow work and is coming on strong for his first time doing the pattern classes. Not many 4 yo studs can win an All Around Title the first time entering and then carry an Amateur to a top 5 finish. Malichi is becoming the 4 yo wonder horse. 🦄

Pig-pig does what he does best and showed off his confidence and athleticism on a cow. He carried another new rider to a personal best run in an event the Pig has never entered with the High School Rodeo Cow Horse. He gave Bailee the prettiest lead changes and took care of her on a fast cow. He carried Blake to a strong 4th in a large class of cutters. This horse truly has the heart of a lion.

This was Journey's first time entering the All Around as well, and she SHOWED UP. We couldn't be more impressed with how she handled this weekend. She placed SECOND in a huge class of cutters and handled a wild cow in the cow work to stay with the big boys. Then this pretty filly went on to handle the trail course like she had actually practiced. We couldn't be prouder of her and can't wait to watch her continue to improve.

A name we haven't seen in quite some time, but boy did he prove he is worth his weight in gold. When Cy realized she needed a different horse to show patterns Sunday AM - Nanny, Papa and Woodrow to the rescue! Woodrow got fed breakfast at the ranch and then came to the show. Cy showed tremendous courage and horsemanship piloting a new horse through the pattern classes. This team is going to be a team to keep an eye on going forward!

One of our favorite parts of being a multi-generational ranching family in the same tiny town is that the places from stories that are told from long ago still exist and can still be experienced today. Audra's Grandpa at 96 still tells stories of gathering cattle in his childhood and driving them through Tuna Fish Slough. Much has changed over the decades of cattle ranching in South Florida. Tuna fish slough is not one of those things.

This handy little mare has come a long way in a short amount of time! She had no confidence out of the arena when she arrived. A whole lot of positive reinforcement and giving her a job and purpose has completely changed her outlook. She went from a sale horse to now her owner really likes her and we couldn't be happier. This 💯💯💯. The best thing you can do to ensure your horse is well cared for if he ever leaves your barn is to make him a well-behaved, broke, dependable horse. Then rehoming is always an option.

If you really want to save horses from slaughter, get your horse broke.

I know that is going to make some people mad.

I’ve been in the horse industry for almost 20 years.

In that time, I have never personally seen a horse that was sane, sound, and safe end up on a slaughter truck.

I’ve seen horses neglected. I’ve seen horses get in terrible shape. And I’ve seen what happens when unwanted horses have nowhere productive to go.

When the slaughter market was shut down, we saw horses being dumped and neglected on a much broader scale because there was suddenly a huge population of unwanted horses with very few places to go.

That was horses suffering because of a broken market—not because slaughter existed.

And it’s an important distinction.

The horse business is an economic business.

If a horse is sane, sound, safe, broke, and useful, that horse has value.

If a horse trader can sell that horse as a useful riding horse, they’re going to make more money doing that than they are shipping it to Canada or Mexico.

So when I hear someone say, “I rescued this horse from the kill pen,” I think there is an important distinction to make.

That horse may absolutely have been in a bad situation.

It may have needed someone to step in.

But if that horse was a safe, useful riding horse, it had value before somebody rescued it.

That’s why I think one of the best things we can do for our horses is make them useful.

Teach them to ride.

Teach them to load.

Teach them to stand for the farrier.

Teach them to behave in new places.

Give them a job.

Make them productive citizens.

I think about classic cars.

One of the worst things you can do to a classic car is never drive it.

I think horses are similar.

One of the worst things we can do to a horse is turn it out in the back pasture, never handle it, never teach it anything, and then wonder why nobody wants to take responsibility for it later.

Walk through our barn and look at every horse Bent E owns.

Bent E could disappear tomorrow and every one of those horses would still have value to somebody besides us.

Some have valuable papers.

Some have breeding value.

But most importantly, they know how to be productive citizens.

They know how to do a job.

They know how to interact with people.

They know how to be handled.

They have skills that make somebody else willing to spend money, time, and resources taking care of them.

And that matters.

If your horse isn’t a productive citizen today, that’s okay.

That’s why horse trainers like us are still in business.

You don’t have to do it yourself. You don’t have to make your horse a show horse. And you don’t have to use me.

Find the trainer you trust and love, and give them a solid foundation.

Because training isn’t just about making your horse better for you.

It’s giving that horse skills that can help protect its future.

And God forbid something happens to you someday.

I’d much rather your horse be the one somebody looks at and says:

“I can do something with this horse.”

That’s one of the best forms of horse insurance I know.

Some ranch c**ts coming right along. This video was the first day they have had a rope thrown and whip popped on their back and they took it really well. Which was good as these two are going to see A LOT of country and cattle.
