🐾 Did you know? 90% of "Food Allergies" aren't actually allergies!

Many dog parents confuse allergies and sensitivities, but they are very different:

Allergies - A true immune system reaction. The body overreacts to a specific substance (like pollen, dust, or a protein). Usually causes immediate and obvious symptoms, such as severe itching, hives, swelling, or respiratory issues.

Relatively rare in dogs—less than 10% of cases.

Sensitivities- A milder, often delayed reaction to food or environmental triggers. The immune system isn’t fully overreacting, but the body struggles to process certain ingredients or substances. Can cause chronic symptoms: itching, paw licking, digestive upset, ear infections, anxiety, or hyperactivity.

Extremely common—over 90% of dogs with issues actually have sensitivities rather than true allergies.

šŸ’” Why it matters: Treating sensitivities like allergies often fails because the triggers are hidden or subtle. Understanding your dog’s unique sensitivities allows you to remove what’s causing discomfort and restore health.

s Your Dog’s Food Creating a "Nutrient Block"? šŸ¾āš ļø

You’re buying the high-quality kibble, checking the labels, and ensuring they get their minerals—but what if your dog’s body can't actually use them?

The culprit might be Glyphosate, a common herbicide found in many pet food staples like oats, barley, lentils, and potatoes. 🌾
šŸ›‘ The "Absorption Block" Explained

Glyphosate acts as a potent chelator. This means it binds to essential minerals in the gut, "locking" them away so your dog’s body can’t absorb them. Even if the food is "mineral-rich," your dog might still be facing a hidden deficiency.

šŸ” Signs to Watch For: Because this interference affects the liver, kidneys, and immune system, symptoms often mimic other issues:

Dull or Flaky Coat: Missing out on Zinc and Copper often leads to "brittle" fur or dry skin.

The "Fake" Allergy: Chronic itching and red paws are often mistaken for food allergies when they are actually signs of mineral depletion.

Weakened Immunity: Frequent ear infections or slow-healing hotspots.
Digestive Sensitivity: A compromised gut barrier that just can’t seem to settle.

šŸ’” The Bottom Line

If your pup is struggling with persistent skin or energy issues despite a great diet, it’s time to look at the source of their ingredients. Reducing exposure to glyphosate-heavy crops can help "unblock" their nutrition and get their health back on track.

🐾 Homemade Dog Food: It’s About Learning, Not Just Ingredients

Most pet owners who switch to homemade meals do so out of a deep desire to provide better nutrition. It’s common to join online groups and find recipes that look wholesome, but without a foundation in nutritional education, the potential to cause unintentional harm can outweigh the benefits of fresh ingredients.

Fresh food is a great start, but it isn't always complete.

We analyzed a common recipe shared online—containing chicken, oats, and vegetables—to see how it measured up. The results show why simply "copying and pasting" a recipe can be risky:

The Calcium Gap: This recipe met only 37% of a dog's calcium requirement. Over time, this can lead to serious bone and joint issues.

The Iodine "Zero": The recipe contained 0% of the necessary iodine, which is critical for thyroid health and metabolism.

The Vitamin D Trap: It provided only ~2% of the Vitamin D needed. Unlike humans, dogs can't just soak up Vitamin D from the sun; it must be in their bowl.

The Imbalance Paradox: While it was deficient in some areas, it actually had dangerous excesses in others. In nutrition, more is not always better it can be toxic.

āš ļø Why "Guessing" is Risky

The biggest misconception is that if we feed more of a deficient food, the dog will get what they need. Unfortunately, feeding more just increases the calories while maintaining the same dangerous ratios.

Education Over Observation

Homemade feeding is a rewarding journey, but it requires moving from "guessing" to "knowing." A list of ingredients is not a formula. Understanding how to balance minerals and vitamins is the only way to ensure that your effort to do better actually results in a healthier dog.

Why I Make Stuffed Trachea Treats for Dogs 🐾

When I make treats for dogs, I want them to support health, not just taste good.

Beef trachea is a natural chew that provides glucosamine and chondroitin, which help support joint health and mobility. The crunchy texture also encourages natural chewing, helping support dental health and providing calming mental enrichment.

I stuff them with fresh meat and simple vegetables instead of fillers or artificial ingredients. Using real food keeps the ingredient list short and intentional, especially important for dogs with food sensitivities.

Fresh, whole foods help:

Reduce exposure to common dietary triggers
Support digestion and nutrient absorption
Avoid unnecessary additives and preservatives

For dogs prone to itching, digestive upset, or chronic inflammation, limited ingredients and fresh food can make a meaningful difference. Knowing exactly what goes into a treat allows us to choose ingredients that work with a dog’s body instead of against it.

Treats don’t need to be complicated.
They just need to be thoughtfully made.

The cost of dry food is $0.48 per ounce, whereas homemade food costs less than $0.9 per ounce including added vegetables.

Additionally, I am aware of the ingredients used, which are of high quality, devoid of additives, preservatives, fillers, and synthetic vitamins. The food is fresh and healthy.

Chronic dog itchy skin isn’t just a surface issue.

The skin is a living ecosystem—and when its microbiome is disrupted, inflammation, sensitivity, and repeated flare-ups follow.

That’s why:

Over-bathing can make things worse
Random diet changes don’t always help
Symptoms return after short-term relief

In my latest blog, I walk through the itch–scratch cycle, the gut–skin connection, and practical ways to support healing without harsh approaches.

If you want a clearer understanding of what your dog’s skin is trying to tell you, this article is a good place to start.
