🍹 Welcome to Friday’s Yappy Hour!

Where the leashes come off and I spill the tea on life as a dog trainer—with a little less training and a lot more trainer. 🍷🐾

🍷 This Week: Things My Dogs Have Taught Me About Being a Trainer 🤔

First, Let’s bust a myth:

Being a dog trainer does NOT mean our own dogs are perfectly behaved.

In fact, I’m pretty sure the universe gives trainers the dogs that keep us humble. 😂

Take Bandit the Foster Dog . 🐕‍🦺

She came driven to chase cars, cats and ceiling fans. She barks. She has opinions. BIG opinions.

She has me standing there thinking:

“Well…this wasn't exactly in the career brochure."😂

And then there's Hope. ❤️

Hope is the dog who wears a muzzle at the vet.

And yes—she's muzzle trained and comfortable wearing it.

Because being a good trainer isn't about pretending my dog never struggles.

It's about knowing your dog, preparing for what they need, and finding humane, supporting ways to help them feel safe.

And, of course, there's the ultimate trainer confession:

I can tell a client, “Barking is communication. Yelling back isn't going to stop it.”

Meanwhile, Bandit:
WOOF! WOOF! WOOF!

Me: “BANDIT. WE HAVE DISCUSSED THIS!” 🫣😂

But these girls are teaching me something even more important.

🆗️It's okay to feel overwhelmed.

🆗️It's okay to question practices.

🆗️It's okay to say, “This isn't working. Let's rethink this.”

🆗️It's okay to take a break.

And sometimes, taking that break is exactly what we need to come back as a better version of ourselves.

My girls are complex rescue dogs. They've challenged me, humbled me, made me laugh and cry, made me question myself—and made me a better trainer. Not just for dogs, but for their people too.

They've reminded me that progress isn't always pretty.

That perfection isn't the goal.

And that sometimes the best thing you can do for your dog—and yourself—is stop, breathe, reset and try again.

And most importantly: ❤️ The relationship matters more than getting everything right.🌟

So yes…

I'm a dog trainer.

And my dogs still bark, chase things they shouldn't, surprise me, challenge me and occasionally make me question every professional decision I've ever made. 😂

And I still show up for them every day. And I'm still learning too.💞

None of the challenges takes away from the amount of progress we have made.

🐾 Meet Gracie! 💕

At just 5 months old, Gracie had her very first training session with The P.E.T. Impact—and this little girl came ready to learn! 🥰

We covered A LOT in our first session:

🎀 Harness comfort — We reintroduced her harness in a way that makes putting it on easier, more comfortable, and less stressful for both Gracie and Mom.

🦮 The leash is NOT a tug toy!😂 We’re teaching Gracie what the leash means and building better habits through fun, engaging learning.

🦷 Those puppy bitey moments🦖 — Because puppy teeth + human hands = a whole lot of “OUCH!” We worked on understanding what’s happening and giving Gracie better outlets.

💨 Zoomies have a reason! We started looking at what fuels those crazy puppy bursts and how meeting her needs can help turn chaos into productive play and learning.

And the BEST part?

💕 Gracie is already enrolled in our next YES, DOG! group training class!

Mom said she wants Gracie to be a pal—and honestly, YES, DOG! is the perfect place for that. 🐶🐶

Because puppy training isn't just about teaching a dog to “behave.” It's about helping humans understand what's happening, giving puppies appropriate ways to be puppies, and building a relationship that lasts.

Sunday mornings with Bandit. 🐾❤️

There’s something special about our Sunday routine.

We head out for our weekly walk when the roads are quiet, the cars are scarce, and Bandit can slow down and enjoy being a dog. Sniffing. Exploring. Taking in the world at his own pace.

And then… that special breakfast! 🥞🐶

It’s not just a walk and it’s not just a meal. It’s a little ritual that gives us something to look forward to—and gives us time to simply enjoy being together.

For a dog who has had a complicated journey, these ordinary moments feel pretty extraordinary. ❤️

Sometimes the best training is simply creating opportunities for our dogs to feel safe, curious, and connected.

🐾🍹 Welcome to Friday’s Yappy Hour — where the leashes come off and I spill the tea on life as a dog trainer with a little less training, a little more trainer.

🤔Todays topic:
Who has been a big influence on HOW you interact with your dogs?

I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately.

None of us becomes the dog handler—or the person—we are in isolation. Along the way, there are people, dogs, experiences, successes, failures, and *aha!* moments that change the way we see our canine companions.

For me, Dancing Hearts - Kathy Kawalec has been one of those influential voices.

Her words about connection and cooperation really resonated with the kind of trainer I wanted to become.

Because the goal isn't simply to get a dog to do what we ask.

I want to understand the dog in front of me.

I want to build communication.

I want cooperation to be something we create together, not something we demand.

And perhaps most importantly, I want the humans I work with to discover that their relationship with their dog can be so much more than a list of behaviors their dog knows.

That's a big part of The PET Impact

This adorable 6-month-old Lab is VERY excited about her upcoming in-home training sessions! 😂💛

And honestly? That enthusiasm is something we want to work WITH—not work against.

At 6 months, there is a whole lot going on: curiosity, energy, big feelings, new skills, and a growing sense of independence.

Our job isn't to squash that puppy personality.

It's to help her learn how to navigate the world, communicate with her humans, make good choices, and turn all that enthusiasm into skills she can use for life.

And the best part?

We get to do it together, right where real life happens. 🏡🐶

Because good training isn't about creating a perfectly obedient dog.

It's about creating a confident, connected human-dog team.
