One of the most important foundations of heel work starts with the lure.

In today’s video, I’m demonstrating how to use your hand as a steering wheel to guide your dog’s movement. Once your dog understands how to follow your hand, you can begin shaping more advanced behaviors. Over time, those movements become associated with cues like “heel,” teaching your dog to move into position and eventually sit automatically at your side.

Remember, this doesn’t happen in a single training session. It’s built through small, achievable steps, with each success laying the foundation for the next.

Another tip that will make your training sessions much smoother: wear a treat pouch. Having rewards immediately available allows you to mark and reinforce the behavior the moment it happens. If your treats are buried in a Ziploc bag or another container, you’ll spend valuable time fumbling to get them out, and that delay can reduce the effectiveness of your timing.

Preparation and timing are just as important as the exercises themselves.

Training starts with the fundamentals. 🐶

Today, Ghost is learning one of the most valuable behaviors he’ll ever know: Place.

We begin by using my hand as a steering wheel, guiding him onto and off of the cot to build confidence and help him understand where I want him to be. Once he’s comfortable, I lure him into the down position and introduce the cue “Place.”

As soon as Ghost performs the behavior I’m looking for, I mark it with “Yes!” to let him know that’s exactly what earned the reward.

After he’s lying down, I switch to using “Good” while rewarding him in position. This helps reinforce duration, teaching him that remaining calm and staying on the cot is just as important as getting there in the first place.

Clear communication, precise timing, and consistency create confident dogs. 💪🐾

Distance, duration, and clear communication. 🐾

Today, Lynette and Maple are working on the down while adding distance. The goal is for Maple to remain in position as Lynette moves from left to right before returning to reward.

Throughout this exercise, you’ll hear the marker word “Good.” This lets Maple know she’s making the correct choice and encourages her to continue maintaining the behavior until she’s rewarded.

One of the biggest mistakes people make is rewarding without communicating why. A clear marker helps your dog understand exactly what behavior you want them to continue, making training more effective and reliable.

Great work today, Lynette and Maple! 👏🐶
