It has been so long since I have been to the ocean! I didn’t know how much my spirit missed it until I landed here at Carmel by the Sea. We had a little time before the beautiful wedding we attended. Every cell in my body was happy.❤️ it has been way too long that my bare feet I’ve been swept by waves. For those of you who know, you know the journey I’ve been on. We are lucky to have this beautiful land here in California.

Believe it or not, this is dog training. I am making it a point to sit out here with Max quietly. His only job is to stay right there on the futon and not react to the people, the dogs, the squirrels, the scents, and the neighbors I don’t like. He is very anxious, and very protective, so to just sit there is very unnatural for him. But he’s doing it. And every day it gets a little better 🥰.

I grew up in Germany, on Mexican food. As soon as I could reach the stove safely, my father had me flipping taco shells. My father was not Mexican, he was from Prussia. But he was a passionate cook. I remember the weekends filled with lots of people when my father used to invite his soldiers over for dinner, where he would cook giant barrels of food for his platoon. When he retired, he bought two food trucks. He served tacos and burritos from both of them, and his food was a hit. He had a secret sauce. Every two days he got fresh meat from the butcher,, he had us all making refried beans, he had us all slicing and dicing, prepping for the food truck anytime I was in town. He even grated the cheese because he said pre-grated cheese was not real. He would definitely scold me if he saw this pre-chopped salad/carrot thing I have going on in this burrito. Everything was super fresh, and his food was known far and wide. He would make burritos the size of small children and sell them for $3.50. My father was a passionate cook but a terrible businessman. I lived about an hour away from him, so my exposure to the trucks was sporadic.

But I am here today because I keep thinking of my father‘s food and his sauce. Because he made me do all these things. I was always a little bitchy about having to prep, so I never really paid attention when he made his sauce. I have spent the last few years trying to piece together that sauce. I have picked my mother‘s brain. I have tried to reach my father in my dreams. I have looked through any of the paperwork we have of his to see if he stuck a recipe somewhere.

My message to you today is: if you have a parent that has a special food, LEARN TO MAKE that food while you can. I could kick myself in the butt every day that I never paid attention. My father is probably somewhere looking at me laughing his ass off.

Now you all know why I’m such a snob about Mexican food😂

I just went outside to check something and walked by these gorgeous flowers. They literally traced me to pick them now I need to figure out a way to preserve the beauty. They are so luscious and gorgeous right now. Geraniums, calendula and sage. They smell yummy too! This is my instant attempt, I just glued them on a piece of court stock and put them underneath a stack of books to see what happens, but if anybody has any great flower preserving ideas, let me know. Preferably something without chemicals and that I can use somehow like cards or something. Maybe I’ll even try to squish them on a card and see if the juices will just stay on the paper. Like I said, they have me in their hook now.

So, I was sitting outside contemplating a bit of a sh*tty day, when all of a sudden something skittered across my arm, and I almost slapped it. Thankfully, I realized it was my praying mantis before I hit the target. She did go flying off my arm. But as you can see, she found her way back to me. Excuse my dirty nails I’ve been working in the garden. Every year I have one praying mantis who lives in my front yard and graces me with magical presence. Now that she is here, I know everything will be better 🌟
