👁️ Ocular Dermoids: How Did That Get There??
Did you know that some dogs and cats can be born with a dermoid, a patch of normal skin tissue that develops on the eye?
Dermoids can contain hair follicles, hairs, and sometimes even glands, and they are most commonly found on the cornea, conjunctiva, or eyelids. As the hair continually rubs against the eye, it can cause chronic irritation, inflammation, tearing, and discomfort. 🐾
While small dermoids may sometimes cause minimal clinical signs, larger or strategically located dermoids often require surgical removal to improve comfort and protect the eye.
🔬 Surgical correction is typically curative, and early intervention can help prevent chronic corneal irritation and secondary changes to the eye.
If your pet has persistent tearing, squinting, redness, or an unusual area of tissue on the eye, a veterinary ophthalmologist can determine whether a dermoid or another ocular condition is responsible.
