We love our old man, Shemp 🤎🐐

On Saturday, our vet, Dr. Skillman, came out and did senior checks on our goat brothers, Shemp and Curly. Shemp LOVES any and all attention and handled his checkup like a champ. Curly has a much smaller circle of trust and was ready to go back to his house. 🥺🥺

We have noticed some changes in Shemp’s eating habits, and last week we noticed a lump on the right side of his mouth (it’s actually visible in the first photo). Dr. Skillman confirmed our belief that he was having dental problems. She floated his teeth and gave him antibiotics to keep him comfortable for now. She recommends removing some teeth if we can get his weight up a bit. We are hopeful that now these dental issues are taken care of, he will be back to eating normally and will put the weight back on. We are also going to increase his hay pellet intake and add peanuts and extra flax seed to the joint supplement he already gets to aid with the weight gain.

Dr. Skillman also found that Shemp is anemic. As goats get older, they have a harder time absorbing nutrients. So, she gave him a shot with iron and other vitamins and nutrients to help him get back on track. Curly’s test results also indicated he’s not absorbing nutrients as well, so he was given a shot of vitamins/nutrients as well! Besides that, he didn’t have any other problems 🥳

Yesterday was our second LEAP session of the 2026-2027 school year 🥳🌱📝

The day started with the LEAPers helping out with the morning chores around the sanctuary. After that, our lesson for the day was on climate consciousness. We talked about what changes we are noticing in the climate, and small ways in which we can help. We also read an article on young people’s “climate anxiety,” and had a discussion surrounding that. These are big topics, and our students are passionate — it’s their future at stake, they have to be! Together as a group, they brainstormed some things they can do to have immediate positive impacts on our environment and the species within it, such as planting native plants, shutting of lights when it gets dark to help migratory birds, and leaving leaves instead of raking them. They also discussed and picked their action items to work on as a group.

For lunch, we had vegan mac n cheese testing. Annie’s gluten free was the favorite, beating Goodles, Safeway brand, and Daiya.

After lunch, we took a break and hung out with the animals before getting into our rewilding workshop. We learned about native plants and how they are essential for our local ecosystems. Then, we added a few native plants from Mother Natives to our native plant garden! We also created a small fountain for our pollinators and other wildlife to enjoy.

Lastly, our friend and volunteer Krystal with AAPI Force came to talk about the importance of voting and how to register.

We definitely have a group of change makers, and we can’t wait to support them in creating the change they wish to see 🌎✨

Thank you to everyone who came out tonight to watch The Sheep Detectives with us! It was a magical, sheep-filled evening. Poppy made sure to make her rounds, reminding everyone who the real star sheep is 🐑✨

Most people will never get the chance to meet a sheep up close or to know how amazing they are. They are so often portrayed as stupid or “just sheep” in our media and broader society. So it’s really comforting to see a movie portray them as intelligent companions who have complex social lives and feelings. They are just as lovable as our dogs and cats at home, and we want more people to know that!

As one of the characters in the movie says about sheep: “For, like humans, they cherish belonging above all. They allow themselves to belong to us. And so, we find we belong to them.” 🤍✨🐑

We have a new sheep friend we want you to meet — Oswald! 😍

We don’t know much about Oswald’s life before he ended up at our county shelter, Bradshaw Animal Shelter. Obviously, a shelter is a tough place for any animal, but they’re ESPECIALLY tough for farm animals — let alone disabled ones! We knew it would be best for him to be out of the shelter and seen by an experienced large animal vet.

Our amazing rescue partner Genevieve'sGentleHeartsRescue pulled Oswald from the shelter, taking on all financial responsibility for him. He will be living with us as a foster until he goes to his forever home at Tikkun Olam Farm Sanctuary in Oregon.

So, what’s up with Oswald?

After a visit with UC Davis Weill School of Veterinary Medicine on Tuesday, the vets think he essentially just didn’t develop properly in the womb. They don’t have reason to believe he’s in any pain, and his spine is straight and sturdy. He bears weight a bit differently on that crooked back leg, but he definitely uses it! He has pneumonia, but the vets think it’s secondary and doesn’t have to do with his (adorable) smooshed face. He’s just a wonky guy who will need monitoring for arthritis as he gets older, but that’s it! He’s super special and we are honestly a little sad that we can’t keep him forever 🥹 But we are really happy to have him while we do!

This could be you if you come to our upcoming movie night 😍 showing “The Sheep Detectives” 🎬🐑🕵🏻

Come meet and hang out with our 4 rescued sheep residents — Dusty, Meadow, Willow, and Poppy! After lots of time snuggling sheep, we will watch “The Sheep Detectives” projected outside on the lawn of the sanctuary while enjoying vegan popcorn and hot cocoa! 😋

Is there anything better than watching a movie about sheep, on a sanctuary with rescued sheep?! 🥹🥹

Today is World Farmed Animals Day 🐷🐮🐔

Every year on October 2nd, we take extra time to recognize the billions of animals killed each year for food. In the US alone, that number is 10 billion per year (Source: Farm Sanctuary)

There are more farmed animals on the planet than there are humans. That means it is more likely to be born into life on a factory farm that it is to be born human.

We also read somewhere once that it is more likely to be struck by lightning than it is for a farmed animal to end up at a sanctuary. We like to think that means the animals at our sanctuary are LITERALLY miracles ♥️

We can all do our part to help farmed animals by choosing to eat vegan foods. And, if you are local to Sacramento, this month is the Vegan Chef Challenge, meaning local restaurants add new vegan items to their menu and compete for awards. There is no better time to try vegan than now!
