The entire brief was: "make him look cool."

No photo. No breed standard. No length in millimeters. Just vibes.

So here's what "cool" translates to once it becomes an actual haircut — tight on the body, a little fuller through the legs so he doesn't read as skinny, head kept round, ears left long. That's almost always the look people have in their head when they can't put it into words.

He walked out of here like he had a reservation somewhere.

He came in looking like nobody had put hands on him in a very long time.

We don't always get the backstory, and we've learned not to push for it. What we can tell you is that he stood completely still for all of it — the mats, the ears, the nails, every part that dogs normally squirm through — like he had been waiting a long while for someone to bother.

An hour and a half later he had a face again. He looked years younger, and he acted it the second he hit the floor.

Dogs turn things around a lot faster than the rest of us do.

There's a moment with a coat like Bruno's where you genuinely don't know where to start.

It was matted down close to the skin in several spots, and there's no clean first cut on a dog like that. You pick a place, get the blade underneath safely, and work outward. It's slow, and it has to be — the skin under a mat is thin, tender and easy to catch.

He stood there and let us do every bit of it without a single complaint.

She has never once thanked us.

Biggie is ninety pounds of coat, and grooming him is a two-person job from start to finish.

The bath takes two of us. The dryer runs long enough that you start thinking about what's for dinner. And the undercoat that comes off a dog like this genuinely fills a bag — which is exactly the point, because that packed-in layer traps heat and moisture against the skin all summer long.

People sometimes think shaving a double coat is the kindness. It isn't. Getting the dead undercoat out and leaving the topcoat to do its job is what actually cools him down.

Two hours later he walked out looking about a third smaller and fully aware of it.
