🐾 PSA from a Great Dane breeder 🐾
With the announcement of the new live-action Scooby-Doo, I wanted to say something before the wave hits.
I know a lot of people are going to fall in love with the look of Scooby—and I completely understand. Great Danes are stunning, goofy, loyal, emotional giants and they leave paw prints on your heart forever.
But please don’t choose a dog because of a movie, a trend, a color, or a viral moment.
I happen to breed the same color they chose for the movie, and while I expect interest to increase, I want to advocate for the breed first.
A Great Dane is not a novelty. They are giant breed dogs with giant breed needs:
Giant food bills and giant vet bills.
Training and socialization from day one is a must. Space requirements are essential. I’m sorry but a Dane in a studio apartment or travel travel trailer is just asking for happy tail, stiff joints, and so forth. Shorter average lifespans are also something people don’t consider. You’re not going to have 15+ years of memories. You’re blessed if you get 10.
And color should NEVER be the deciding factor.
If you’re considering adding a Dane to your family because of Scooby, I genuinely encourage you to slow down and research:
• Temperament
• Breed history
• Health testing
• Ethical breeding practices
• Cost of ownership
• Whether a giant breed truly fits your lifestyle
Ask questions. Meet adults. Learn before you commit.
I love seeing people discover this breed—but I love seeing Great Danes end up in the right homes even more.
Choose the dog for your life, not the trend. ❤️
