As part of our weekly tick-borne disease series, we're highlighting another disease that can affect our canine companions. We've already discussed Cytauxzoonosis (Cytaux) in cats and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. This week, we're focusing on Ehrlichiosis.

Ehrlichiosis is caused by bacteria that are transmitted through the bite of infected ticks, most commonly the brown dog tick and lone star tick. This disease can affect dogs of all ages and can range from mild to severe if left untreated.

Signs of Ehrlichiosis may include:
• Fever
• Lethargy
• Loss of appetite
• Weight loss
• Swollen lymph nodes
• Nosebleeds or unusual bruising
• Joint pain or stiffness
• Pale gums

Some dogs may show very subtle signs initially, while others can become seriously ill, especially if the infection becomes chronic.

Prevention is the best medicine:
-Keep your pets on year-round tick prevention.
-Check for ticks after spending time outdoors.
-Remove ticks promptly.
-Schedule routine wellness exams and annual screening tests as recommended by your veterinarian.

The good news is that Ehrlichiosis is often treatable when diagnosed early. That's one reason regular tick prevention and routine testing are so important, especially in areas where ticks are common.

Fireworks Season Is Here!

While many people enjoy fireworks, they can be frightening and stressful for our pets. Loud noises, flashing lights, and unexpected booms can trigger anxiety, panic, and even attempts to escape.

Here are a few ways to help your furry family members feel more comfortable:

-Keep pets indoors during fireworks displays.

-Create a safe, quiet space with their favorite bed, blankets, or toys.

-Use calming music, white noise, or the TV to help mask outside sounds.

-Make sure doors, gates, and windows are secure to prevent accidental escapes.

-Check that ID tags and microchip information are up to date.

-If your pet has a history of severe anxiety, contact your veterinarian before the holiday to discuss calming options or medications.

Remember, signs of anxiety can include pacing, trembling, panting, hiding, excessive vocalization, or destructive behavior.
