🐾 Pete the Hedgehog 🐾
We wanted to share a little update on one of our special hedgehogs, Pete. 💙
Over the weekend, Pete suddenly developed a serious medical condition called eye proptosis, which required an emergency vet visit and surgery. Unfortunately, his eye could not be saved and had to be removed—but we’re incredibly grateful to say that Pete is doing well and is already on the road to recovery! 🥹
He’s been such a strong little guy through it all, and we’re so proud of how he’s handled everything.
🙏 A huge thank you to Advent Veterinary Services for their quick, compassionate, and professional care. We’re incredibly thankful for the team that helped Pete through this emergency!
💡 A quick bit of education for fellow hedgehog owners:
Eye proptosis is when the eye becomes displaced or “bulges” out of the socket. In hedgehogs, this can happen more easily because their eye sockets are naturally shallow. It can be caused by trauma, infection, dental issues, or swelling behind the eye, and it is considered a true emergency that requires immediate veterinary care.
Without quick treatment, the exposed eye can dry out and become severely damaged, which is why fast action is so important. In some cases—like Pete’s—removal of the eye is the safest and most humane option to keep them comfortable and pain-free.
❤️ We’re sharing Pete’s story not just as an update, but as a reminder of how important it is to:
• Monitor your hedgehogs closely
• Seek immediate vet care for anything unusual
• Provide safe, smooth enclosures to reduce injury risks
Pete has a healing journey ahead, but he’s already back to being his sweet, curious self—and we’ll be right here with him every step of the way.
Drop some ❤️ for Pete in the comments to help cheer him on!
