We Kill Her on Sight. She Has Never Bitten Anyone.
On a sun-warmed rocky ledge in the budding spring forest, a heavy, dark-banded serpent rests quietly, feeling the vibrations of heavy hiking boots approaching.

We freeze, terrified, convinced this aggressive venomous predator is coiled and eager to strike.

In reality, this native Timber Rattlesnake (Crotalus horridus, Status: Endangered in many states) is sluggishly emerging from a six-month winter brumation. She is twenty-two years old and has peacefully shared this exact trail with humans since before our children were born. She possesses the loudest warning system in the eastern woods. Her rattle is a desperate plea for distance, designed entirely to prevent a physical strike she cannot afford.

As a vital, interconnected forest guardian, she actively protects our families. By consuming thousands of white-footed mice over her 30-year lifespan, she is one of nature's most effective natural barriers against tick-borne Lyme disease.

You can easily coexist with this ancient survivor. If you hear her rattle, simply stop, locate her, and take three steps back. Keep your dogs leashed and walk around her.

She has spent two decades warning us so we could walk away unharmed. Give her the same respect.
