🎓 Congratulations, Dexter! 🎓

Dexter, our 12-year-old Pug graduate, has officially completed his training program!

Dexter’s family reached out after bringing home a Great Pyrenees puppy named Lila. The transition wasn’t going smoothly, and they were concerned that if Dexter couldn’t learn to live peacefully with her, they might have to make the difficult decision to return the puppy.

Through training, structure, and patience, Dexter made an incredible transformation. He learned how to feel more comfortable around Lila, and the two are now doing amazingly well together.

One of the best parts of Dexter’s journey is being reminded that age is just a number. At 12 years old, he showed that old dogs can absolutely learn new tricks and make meaningful changes when given the right guidance.

We’re incredibly proud of the progress Dexter has made and excited for the future he and Lila now get to share together.

🎓 Congratulations, Boone! 🎓

Boone, our 2-year-old Black Lab graduate, has officially completed his training program!

One of the biggest changes we saw during Boone’s time with us was his growing confidence. He learned how to work through new and unfamiliar situations instead of being overwhelmed by them, allowing him to navigate the world with much more confidence and clarity.

Boone also made great progress with his focus, learning how to tune in to his handler and make good decisions even in distracting environments.

We’re incredibly proud of the progress he’s made and excited to see him continue building on these skills at home!

🎓 Congratulations, Jax! 🎓

Jax, our Husky/German Shepherd mix graduate, has officially completed his training program!

When Jax first came to us, he had a ton of energy and needed clear direction on where to put it. Through consistent structure, communication, and training, he made massive progress learning how to channel that energy into productive behaviors.

We’re incredibly proud of how far he’s come and excited to see him continue growing with his family at home.

It is truly an honor to work alongside the City of Salem Animal Shelter and support the incredible work being done for the dogs in our community. Every dog deserves the opportunity to be understood, guided, and given a fair chance to succeed.

We’re grateful for the trust you’ve placed in us and proud to play a role in helping these dogs build the skills and confidence they need to find lasting homes. Seeing a dog go from struggling in the shelter environment to thriving with a family is what makes this work so rewarding.

Thank you to the shelter staff, volunteers, fosters, and adopters who make these second chances possible every day. We look forward to continuing this partnership and helping even more dogs find the futures they deserve.

Mark your calendars because Mega Adoption Event: Summer Edition is ONE MONTH away! 🌞🐾

We’re adding some extra Mega fun to the calendar this year with a summertime edition of our beloved annual adoption event! Join us Saturday, June 27 from 10AM–4PM at the Berglund Center for a huge day of adoptable pets, community, and celebration. More than a dozen local shelters and rescues will be joining us, all coming together with one goal: helping animals find homes.

Adopting a pet is a lifelong commitment and you never have to do it alone. At AoA, our promise is to support you and help you and your new companion thrive together for years to come.

Firstly, every pet goes home with a strong foundation for good health and has been examined by our Vet team, spayed/neutered, is up to date on their vaccines and preventatives, has a microchip, and has been treated for any known medical concerns before adoption. To help keep that good bill of health going, our low-cost Community Pet Clinic is here for routine care, surgeries, and more because veterinary care should never feel out of reach.

We also partner with the dog whisperers at Dragon’s Tooth Dog Training and many of our Adoption Center dogs begin working with them during their time here. Every single AoA adopter receives one free training session to help make the transition from shelter life to home life as smooth as possible.

Lastly, if you ever need temporary support we’re here for that too. Our Guardian Angel Program offers short-term care for pets during emergencies situations. Our pet food pantry at Saleeba’s Store of Hope is also open the 2nd and 4th Friday of every month from 2–4pm to help families needing a little extra support.
