Heading out hunting with your dog?

A little prep goes a long way. đŸŸ

Here’s the gear we recommend for working dogs:

1. Rex Specs goggles.

Brush, sun, and snow can be hard on a dog’s eyes, and goggles help protect them.

2. Ear protection.

If you’ll be shooting around your dog, ear pro protects their ears. It also helps dogs who aren’t thrilled with loud noises.

3. A life jacket for duck dogs.

Most are great swimmers, but retrieving back and forth is a lot of work.

A jacket helps keep them warm and helps them float.

One more tip: don’t find out how your dog handles loud noises on the first day of the hunt.

Practice around gunfire and the rest of the hunting environment ahead of time, so you already know how they’ll react when it’s the real thing.

“We’re doing this. There’s no turning back.”

That’s the thought that changed everything. đŸŸ

Chris left a job he’d been at for 17 years to make the jump into this business.

It was scary.

We had talked about it for years, going back and forth with “I don’t know if we should.”

The truth is, if you keep second guessing and never shift your mindset, you’ll never make the jump.

So he shifted how he thought.

This has to work.

We’ll put everything we have into it.

And yes, get educated first.

Don’t just jump.

But mindset isn’t a one-time thing.

After the big leap comes the day-to-day over months and years.

Some days you wake up stressed and feel like you can’t do it, and that’s when you give each other a pep talk and remind each other: we can do this.

Does your dog still need food to learn something new?

Sometimes the answer is yes, and that’s okay. đŸŸ

Once a dog is trained, a lot of the reward becomes praise and love.

Archer is a good example.

He’s moved away from a treat pouch on 24/7 and meals fed in training, and his reward now is simply being close to us.

If he isn’t, he thinks we’re mad at him.

But when it’s time to shape a brand new behavior, we go back to the basics.

Bring the food back out and treat it like starting training over.

Then, as time goes on, you work further and further through it until you don’t need the food.

When he does it, you praise, mark it, and love on him.

Archer catches on quickly, but it’s the process that does the work.

Halloween is fun for us, but it can be a spooky time for our dogs. đŸŽƒđŸŸ

Here are three things to think about:

1. Costumes.

If you’re going to dress your dog up, get the costume now and let them get used to it.

Start with something small like a hood or hat, reward them, and keep it fun.

Take it off, put it back on, and add pieces as they get comfortable.

Never leave your dog unsupervised in a costume, since they can shred it and eat it.

2. Trick-or-treating.

Unless your dog has great obedience and does well in crowds, be cautious.

People are running around, screaming, and wearing scary costumes.

If your dog is reactive or fearful, it may be best to stay home.

If your dog is well behaved, take them along, but advocate for them.

Not everyone understands dogs, and some people may try to scare them.

3. Candy.

Chocolate is poisonous to dogs, and there are plenty of other treats that can hurt them.

When the candy comes home, put it somewhere your dog can’t reach.

Imagine you’re in the woods and you come across a bear. đŸ»đŸŸ

You don’t turn and run.

You stand tall, get big, and yell, hoping the bear goes away.

And while you’re doing it, you’re terrified.

A reactive dog is doing the exact same thing.

The barking, lunging, and growling is a dog acting as big and scary as it can, hoping the person or dog it’s reacting to will go away.

Underneath it all, that dog is very fearful.

When you see reactivity as fear instead of aggression, it changes how you handle it.

Getting a new puppy?

Don’t fall for these three myths. đŸŸ

1. “I’ll wait until my puppy is 6 or 8 months old to start training.”

If you bring home a puppy at 8 weeks old, that’s when training starts.

You don’t have to wait.

2. “Crate training isn’t for us.”

Crate training from day one helps with potty training, gets your puppy used to being away from you, gives them a safe space, and teaches them to settle.

Even if your puppy cries at first, it’s worth it.

3. “They’ll figure out potty training as they get older.”

They won’t.

Start right away.

Done correctly, potty training can be handled in a week or two.

If a puppy starts going in the house, they’ll likely keep doing it unless you fix it.

Training early makes everything easier.

Which breeds make the best first dog?

We ranked four of them. đŸŸ

A tier: Golden Retriever. A happy, fun family dog that’s good with people and usually good with other dogs.

A tier: Labrador. An amazing family dog for a first-time owner who loves people and other dogs.

E tier: Cane Corso. This breed has been bred heavily, and there aren’t always good lines out there, so be cautious. For most first-time owners it’s way too much dog to handle and train.

F tier: Belgian Malinois. They can be amazing family dogs (we have two), but for most first-time owners it’s too much dog unless you plan to work with a trainer right away and put in lots of time and effort.

Whatever you choose, be ready for energy, especially with Goldens and Labs.

This is just our opinion, and every dog is an individual.
