We rescued Charlie from Dallas Animal Services and Adoption Center back in March and he has had a long journey with us. He was literally covered in more than 100 ticks the day we picked him up. His foster family took this in stride, removed all of them and cleaned him up. By the time they were done, his coat was gleaming. ✨
But then he faced the real setbacks…He is heartworm positive and as part of the treatment, he began a 4-week course of doxycycline. This is needed to eliminate bacteria and weaken the heartworms before getting injections. Unfortunately, he had a very rare adverse reaction to the medication, which caused his liver to malfunction.
We were able to get to the bottom of it and treat and repair his liver, but he lost so much weight while being sick that we had to put his heartworm treatment on hold.
Charlie is slowly putting on weight and we hope he’s able to continue heartworm treatment soon. In the meantime, he has learned how to be an indoor family pet — and how amazing humans can be.💗
Charlie is a bit mischievous, stubborn and d***y at times. But he’s also happy, playful, affectionate and an all-around joy to be around.
Since he’ll be in the rescue for a while longer, we decided to do a Wisdom Panel DNA test. We thought he was a golden/great Pyr mix. The results surprised us!
Charlie has had an entire team behind him on this journey. Thanks to the staff at Legacy Humane Veterinary Clinic, his foster Angela Scott Pélissié, and the donors who have stepped up to help with Charlie’s food and medical expenses. Thanks to Dallas DrDolittle and Blue Step dog training for their expertise as we worked through some of Charlie’s quirks.
Our community is amazing, we hope you'll continue to follow his journey and watch this shelter dog's life transformed by love, patience, and a second chance.
