After the Giants Fall, Communities Choose the Next Leaders
Industries rise, fall, and reinvent themselves — that’s just the American cycle.

A big company files Chapter 11, the headlines explode, and everyone waits to see who steps into the empty space. The market always resets. A new giant always shows up.

But our communities don’t get to wait for the next “big thing.”

When the big players stumble, the ones who steady the ground aren’t corporations.

They’re our neighbors, the small shops, the nurseries, the makers, the growers. The people who show up every single day without bailouts, without national coverage, and without a safety net.

Local businesses don’t get restructuring teams.
They survive because we choose them.

And right now, with everything shifting, we get to decide who we want to lift.

We get to shape who becomes stronger, who becomes visible, and who becomes the next leader in our own backyard.

This year, maybe the most meaningful gifts won’t come from the places dominating the news.

Maybe they’ll come from Northwest makers, local nurseries, small shops, and artisans whose work reflects heritage, resilience, and story.

Gifts with roots.
Gifts with identity.
Gifts that strengthen the community instead of just filling a cart.

And with AI now part of everyday life, we can make these choices with more intention than ever, researching local shops, discovering regional artists, comparing products ethically, and planning ahead without the overwhelm of national retail chaos.

Industries will adjust.
New leaders will rise.
But communities endure because we choose them.

And as Father Time and Mother Nature like to remind me …
if we don’t make intentional choices early, the seasons will make them for us. Mother is never been subtle, and she’s usually right.

The Importance of Shopping Local Nurseries

It seems like the holidays sneak up faster every year, and I’m already on the lookout for that one unique gift, the kind you can’t find in a big-box aisle. Recently I read that BFG Supply filed for bankruptcy, which surprised me more than I expected. Some may not know that BFG was one of the top-tier suppliers for nurseries and garden centers across North America. Translated, that means the supply chain behind our favorite garden shops just got a little shakier, and some of the items we love may run short.

All the more reason to shop early, shop thoughtfully, and support the local nurseries that support our communities. This past year has been full of challenges, tariffs, uncertainty, and the constant question of what tomorrow might bring. Our independent nurseries feel those pressures more than anyone.

So, I’ve made my list, checked it twice, and I’m doing my holiday shopping early this year, right at my favorite community nursery. Whether it’s a family-run shop or an independent grower, these places are part of the heartbeat of our neighborhoods. Supporting them isn’t just a seasonal gesture; it’s an investment in the future of gardening, local business, and the people who make our towns feel like home.

Last Litter Update - our little red shaded longhair female found an exception family to move in with which leaves us with two. I will try and have update photos today or tomorrow at the latest. The white/tan Piebald with dapple along with the male. I have to have pictures of his face so that you can see what I see. In addition to his fawn coloring, he has a tan muzzle ... and I've never seen that before. I had thought out continuing Mad Max's legacy with him, but my age is suggesting something else. Regardless, I'll have pictures posted no later than tomorrow.

Apple Pie vs. Apple Crisp?

2026 has been an odd year for gardening. My tomatoes are only now starting to mature, yet the apples have been going strong for weeks. Both my Honeycrisp and Gravenstein trees produced exceptional fruit this season, enough that I’ll be delivering a fresh basket to the Renton Food Bank on Monday, along with rhubarb and maybe a few figs.

Last year, I tucked a couple of apple pie mixes into the freezer for Thanksgiving and Christmas, and it worked out perfectly. I’ll probably do the same again, though I’m also tempted to try something different, maybe an apple crisp or homemade applesauce.

It’s been a good year for sharing.

Black Beauty by Anna Sewell published in 1877

"The first place that I can well remember was a large pleasant meadow with a pond of clear water in it. Some shady trees leaned over it, and rushes and water-lilies grew at the deep end. Over the hedge on one side we looked into a plowed field, and on the other we looked over a gate at our master's house, which stood by the roadside; at the top of the meadow was a grove of fir trees, and at the bottom a running brook overhung by a steep bank."

Black Beauty was the first childhood book that I read cover to cover and the above paragraph I can still recite. Below is my Black Beauty driftwood garden art by Michael B. Salazar. And it's my 5th piece of his work. Love it and thank you so much Michael.

Puppy Countdown Begins

The Puppy Countdown officially begins. Moma’s crate is ready, her space is cozy, and now we wait for her perfect timing. There’s something so tender about preparing for a little life you already adore. I can hardly wait!

Rehoming Friday - continuing with rehoming one of ours. Introducing Daisy Mae DOB 4/22/2023. Please PM for additional information. She is looking for a warm lap, "petting hands" along with treats. Very obedient, especially with treats nearby.
