More people are weighing the cost of pet ownership.

A recent analysis suggests rising pet care costs may be playing a role in slowing pet adoptions across the United States. Researchers found adoption rates softened in early 2025 while veterinary spending continued to increase, with vet care costs rising nearly 6% year over year.

Pet ownership remains popular, with about 95 million U.S. households sharing their lives with animals. But experts say affordability is becoming a bigger factor in how people care for pets — and whether they're able to welcome a new one into their home.

Weekend spent with Thistle ❤️ she loves the beach so we heading out there from boarding Springdale Pet Ranch. We met so many nice folks and saw a lot of dogs on leash. Thistle is unbothered by other dogs on leash, but she is not keen on sharing a home with any other dogs.

🚨We recently had an extremist political troll angry about her candidate not winning (we are apolitical) an election, on these threads to harass us & hurt the dogs so please beware, don’t engage & report🚨

ℹ️Back to Thistle, we’ve made some introductions, and a trial recently with a larger coonhound and verified Thistle should be an only dog.

🐕She will fetch until she drops. Ball is life 🎾 she’s athletic & is a pro at agility & nose work. She’s had professional training and glides beautifully over the agility course.

🐕Thistle is looking for an active single dog person or couple. She loves hiking, trail runs, beach walks/runs even does biking and treadmill at the ranch with the amazing staff! She’s a great travel dog too, in a car or RV!

🐕Thistle definitely loves routine & exercise, she’s curious & silly. She will absolutely bond with her human(s) fast, but also needs space for play. Thistle’s ideal home: large fenced yard, big enough for a game of fetch, with active people who know athletic dog breeds. She’s comfortable being in a kennel while you’re on errands and her meals.

ℹ️Thistle’s DNA is American pitbull, Malinois shepherd and a couple other breeds. She was originally rescued from South LA shelter during the wildfires as she was at immediate risk for kennel space. Thistle was in a home for a few months but returned a couple months ago due to a horse accident where her primary caregiver had a devastating & life changing fall & could no longer give her the exercise needed.

Meet Maya! We are puzzled how this lovely lady was abandoned…TWICE💔 Her first stint was at South LA shelter where she was adopted then abandoned in the parking lot of North Central Shelter several weeks later.

Maya’s been failed and that’s just unacceptable. She’s a great pup, foster momma raves about her easy going personality & silly antics around the house. Maya is really easy to train too! We introduced a new walking lead to help her on structured walks and she’s loving it.

At Springdale, we know being a dog dad means being a protector, playmate, treat supplier, and best friend all rolled into one. Whether you're tossing the ball one more time, sharing the couch after a long day, or proudly showing off photos of your pup to anyone who will look, the love is real: and it deserves to be celebrated.

That’s why we’re setting up a photo booth in our lobby on Thursday, June 18th from 3:30pm - 5:30pm so you can capture a special memory with your four-legged sidekick. 📸 Whether it’s a big slobbery smile, a proud pose, or one of those hilariously chaotic photos where nobody is looking at the camera, those are often the moments that mean the most.

Because being a dog dad isn't just about caring for your pup, it's about the countless little moments in between. The happy greetings at the door, the muddy adventures, the quiet companionship, and the unconditional love that somehow makes every day better. 🐶

We are incredibly honored and deeply grateful to announce that Dogs Playing for Life has been selected as a recipient of a $15,000 grant from The Canine Rescue Club's 2025 Wildfire Relief Fund!

During the 2025 Los Angeles wildfire crisis, animal shelters faced extreme strain. Thanks to this vital funding, our teams maintained playgroups and enrichment programming at LA Animal Services, helping by "preserving adoptability and easing the path to rescue and foster placement" as the Canine Rescue Club shared.

As our friends also so beautifully put it:

"Behavioral health is the quiet measure of a shelter's response capacity."
