What Does Your Monthly Board Actually Pay For?

I recently saw a comment in a local horse group suggesting that boarding rates are far higher than the actual cost of caring for a horse. From the outside looking in, it can be easy to assume that board simply covers hay, feed, bedding, and basic daily care. In reality, operating a safe, well-maintained equine facility involves many additional expenses.

Along with the direct care of each horse, monthly board helps cover:

• Property rent or mortgage
• Business and liability insurance
• Electricity and utilities
• Facility, arena, and equipment maintenance
• Fuel for the equipment used around the farm
• Manure removal
• Repairs and replacement of items damaged through normal wear and tear
• Water and feed buckets, hoses, pitchforks, cross-ties, and automatic-waterer parts
• Cleaning supplies and everyday necessities for shared areas
• Payroll for the dependable people who help provide daily care

The list is nearly endless—and many of these expenses continue to rise.

Board is not simply payment for a stall and a few bales of hay. It supports the people, equipment, facilities, and behind-the-scenes work required to provide consistent, professional care while maintaining the safe and comfortable amenities horse owners expect.

There is an enormous amount of time, responsibility, and expense involved in properly caring for horses and operating a quality facility. Boarding rates reflect the true cost of providing that level of care—not just the items that are easiest to see.

Want to become a more confident, balanced, effective rider… not just learn how to stay on a horse?

We currently have a few openings for riding lessons at Charleston Equestrian.

Our program is especially suited for adult riders, including beginners, riders returning after time away, and riders who have struggled with fear, confidence, balance, or feeling like they’re constantly fighting their horse.

With more than 25 years of experience coaching and training, our lessons focus heavily on rider biomechanics, balance, body awareness, confidence, and clear communication with the horse.

One month. ❤️🐴

This is one of my adult beginner students tonight, and she has only been riding with me for a month.

In that short amount of time, she’s already gained so much confidence and developed a secure, balanced position in the saddle. But tonight was one of those lessons where something really clicked.

We’ve been working on one of the biggest concepts I teach: how to get more from your horse by doing less.

Riding doesn’t have to feel like you’re constantly kicking, pulling, squeezing, gripping or working harder than the horse. When you understand how your own body influences theirs…. your balance, weight, timing, alignment and movement… you can communicate much more clearly with far less effort.

And yes… I make riding easier. 😉

That’s the beauty of biomechanics instruction.

I don’t just teach my students what to do. I teach them why it works, how their body affects the horse, and how to recognize when they’ve gotten it right.

Watching that understanding start to come together for an adult beginner is one of my favorite parts of teaching.

Tonight was a breakthrough. And after only one month, I can’t wait to see where she goes from here. ❤️

Please keep a very close eye on your horses and all other animals and pets tomorrow. Make sure they have shade, a fan if possible, lots of electrolytes and they might need to be hosed down frequently.

Horses with metabolic conditions and respiratory conditions will have an even tougher time. 🙏🏻
