💔 Candy deserved more.
On Saturday, we were asked to take in Candy, a Yorkie who was coughing and gagging. Her owner couldn’t afford vet care, and she’d been given as a gift.
Our foster expected a respiratory infection.
When Candy arrived, something wasn’t right. Her mammary glands were swollen and leaking milk. We learned she had given birth two days earlier, and her puppy had died.
But that wasn’t the whole story.
At the vet, we learned Candy still had a puppy trapped inside her, and her uterus had ruptured. She was severely anemic, her blood sugar was dangerously low, and she was critically ill.
Pregnancy and birth can be dangerous, especially for small dogs. Complications include difficult labor, trapped puppies, uterine rupture, bleeding, infection, low blood sugar, and anemia. Without care, both can die.
Candy was too unstable for emergency surgery. Candy was humanely euthanized. 💔
Despite everything, Candy remained sweet and loving until the end.
We share her story not to place blame, but because education saves lives.
Please remember:
🐾 Spay and neuter your pets. Spaying prevents dangerous pregnancies and uterine infections like pyometra.
🐾 Pregnant dogs need veterinary care. A vet can monitor pregnancy, explain warning signs, and plan for emergencies.
🐾 Know the emergency signs. Strong contractions without a puppy, prolonged pauses between puppies, excessive bleeding, foul discharge, weakness, collapse, or a suspected retained puppy require immediate veterinary attention.
🐾 Animals are not gifts. They are lifelong commitments with unexpected expenses.
🐾 Be honest when surrendering an animal. Every detail matters, especially a recent pregnancy, birth, or abnormal discharge.
🐾 Don’t wait to ask for help. If you cannot afford care, contact a veterinarian, rescue, or organization that may assist.
We can’t say whether earlier intervention would have saved Candy, but she deserved that chance.
