Six fields mowed, every trail cleared โ€” feels good to have the place looking sharp again. The flock got their first hour and a half of free-range time in over a month, and they handled it like pros: not a single troublemaker in the bunch, and everyone marched back into the coop right on schedule at dusk. ๐Ÿ“

The gardenโ€™s still putting on a show too โ€” peppers, eggplant, and a rainbow of tomatoes coming in strong, basil bushing out in green and deep purple, zinnias blooming along the paths, and American beautyberry loaded up for fall. Even caught a stunning sunset over the tree line to close things out.

Getting back into the rhythm out here โ€” new routines, a little retraining, a lot of gratitude for this place. ๐ŸŒฒ

Fun fact for the batch update: in medieval England, bad ale wasnโ€™t just a bad batch โ€” it was a legal problem. An official called an โ€œale-connerโ€ would pour your brew onto a wooden bench, sit in it wearing leather breeches, and wait. If his pants stuck to the seat, there was enough sugar left โ€” good batch, you passed. If not? Fines, public humiliation, or a dunk in the village pond via the cucking stool.

Meanwhile our ginger pear-apple mead just finished primary at ~12% ABV with zero pond time required. Modern hydrometers really came through for us here. ๐Ÿฏ๐Ÿ๐Ÿฅ‚

๐ŸŒฑ Seed Starting Day at The Outside Inn!

15 varieties went into the grow tent today โ€” a mix to squeeze out the last of summer and to get a jump start on fall.

Hot Season Push: Dark Opal & Thai basil, Natsu cucumbers, Delicata squash, Blauhilde & Dragon Tongue beans, and sweet mini peppers.

Fall Lineup: Baby Choi & Chinese Cabbage, Slo-Bolt cilantro, Bulgarian Giant leeks, Yod Fah Chinese broccoli, Giant Italy parsley, and Grey Zucchini & Patty Pan squash.

Everything's under 12 hours of light and we're tracking germination through harvest for each one โ€” follow along as they come up!

Eleven years ago, we started putting longleaf pine back in the ground here at The Outside Inn โ€” one of the most ecologically important (and most lost) forest types in the Southeast. Longleaf once covered 90 million acres from Virginia to Texas. Today, less than 5% of that original range remains.
Since 2014, weโ€™ve planted more than 25,000 longleaf pines on this property. Theyโ€™re slow growers, but thatโ€™s kind of the point โ€” deep roots, fire-adapted, built to last generations, not just seasons. Every tree in the ground is a small bet on what this land looks like long after weโ€™re gone.

๐ŸŒฒ Camp Co-Host Wanted โ€” The Outside Inn Tree Farm & Mill (Quincy, FL) ๐ŸŒฒ

We're an 80-acre longleaf pine restoration farm and Hipcamp Star Host property (200+ five-star reviews!) in Gadsden County, just outside Tallahassee โ€” and we're looking for a co-host to help keep things running.

The trade: A full-hookup RV/camper site in exchange for a little help around the farm. This is not a full-time gig โ€” just light, regular upkeep in exchange for your site.

What we'd need help with:
๐Ÿšœ Mowing the general camp and public areas
๐ŸŒพ Bush hogging as needed
๐ŸŒฑ Veggie, herb, and mushroom gardening
๐Ÿšฟ Keeping the restroom and pole barn tidy for guests
๐Ÿ‘‹ Greeting campers when they arrive, showing them around, and answering questions

What you get:
A quiet, shaded full-hookup site on a working conservation farm โ€” 25,000+ longleaf pines, trails, orchard, wetlands, and resident chickens. Summer is our slow season, so it's a great, low-pressure time to settle in and learn the ropes before things pick back up in the fall.

๐Ÿงบ Access to washer/dryer, fridge, and full restroom facilities
๐Ÿ“ถ Free wifi/internet
๐Ÿ‘ Fresh goodies from the orchard and garden when they're in season โ€” shared harvest, of course

๐Ÿพ Well-socialized, non-aggressive pets welcome.
๐Ÿ“‹ References required.
๐ŸŒณ Must be conservation-minded with a deep respect for the land.
๐Ÿš Camper vans and small rigs preferred. Larger rigs with multiple AC units are welcome too, but a small fee may apply to keep the power bill reasonable.
๐ŸŒŸ Homesteading skills are a huge bonus (gardening, small equipment maintenance, animal care, etc.) โ€” but not required.

If you're looking for a peaceful home base, enjoy meeting travelers, and don't mind mowing and a little garden work in exchange for your site, we'd love to hear from you! Comment below, message us, or email [email protected] with a bit about yourself and your rig.
