I was asked a GREAT question by my cousin…. “How do you know if a horse needs Cryotherapy?”

Your horse needs cryotherapy if they are showing signs of acute inflammation, trauma, or muscle soreness.

❄️Cryotherapy can also be used as a preventative measure, it helps a horse decrease chance of injury during performance and helps the horse recover faster.

Signs to look for include abnormal heat in a leg or joint, visible swelling, stiffness, or acute lameness following hard training, injury, or a pasture incident.

Keep an eye out for these specific indicators and scenarios:
❄️Acute Injuries (First 36–48 hours): If your horse has suffered a recent kick, sprained a tendon/ligament, or has a developing joint effusion, immediate targeted cryotherapy constricts blood vessels and prevents excessive tissue damage.
❄️Laminitis: Cryotherapy (continuous icing of the hooves) is the standard preventative and supportive treatment if your horse is at risk for or exhibiting signs of laminitis.
❄️Post-Hard Work: Performance horses benefit greatly from cold therapy applied shortly after intense training or racing to accelerate muscle repair and reduce microtrauma.
❄️General Indicators: Feel for heat, swelling, and pain to the touch. A simple check involves running your hands down the lower limbs to identify any areas that are warmer than the surrounding tissue.
