After more than 12 years of training dogs, here's something I know for certain:

I DON'T KNOW EVERYTHING.

And I'm completely comfortable saying that.

Because the more dogs I work with, the more I realize how much there is still to learn.

Different breeds.

Different genetics.

Different experiences.

Different motivations.

Different challenges.

And different approaches to helping them succeed.

Okay, maybe they know you're unhappy.

But have you actually taught them what you WANT them to do?

Let's say your dog barks every time someone knocks on the door.

You yell, "𝗦𝗧𝗢𝗣 𝗕𝗔𝗥𝗞𝗜𝗡𝗚!"

Maybe they stop.

Maybe they don't.

But what have they learned?

Now imagine a different approach.

Instead of rushing the door, you want your dog to go to Place and wait calmly.

**𝗡𝗢𝗪 𝗪𝗘 𝗛𝗔𝗩𝗘 𝗔 𝗧𝗥𝗔𝗜𝗡𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗣𝗟𝗔𝗡.**

First, teach Place in a quiet environment.

Then teach your dog to remain there.

Then practice moving around while they stay.

Then add small distractions.

Then practice someone approaching the door.

Eventually, we can begin introducing knocking, the doorbell, and guests entering.

One step at a time.

Because asking your dog to perform a behavior they haven't learned, in an environment where they can't yet succeed, isn't fair.

**𝗪𝗘 𝗗𝗢𝗡'𝗧 𝗝𝗨𝗦𝗧 𝗪𝗔𝗡𝗧 𝗧𝗢 𝗦𝗧𝗢𝗣 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗪𝗥𝗢𝗡𝗚 𝗕𝗘𝗛𝗔𝗩𝗜𝗢𝗥.**

We want to teach the RIGHT behavior.

And that starts with one question:

**"𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗗𝗢 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗪𝗔𝗡𝗧 𝗬𝗢𝗨𝗥 𝗗𝗢𝗚 𝗧𝗢 𝗗𝗢 𝗜𝗡𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗔𝗗?"**

That's how we approach training at Ruff Pup.

Not simply reacting to problems.

Teaching dogs how to make better choices.

Barking.

Lunging.

Pulling.

Freezing.

Getting overwhelmed.

Sometimes the hardest part of having a reactive dog isn't just the behavior itself.

It's not knowing what to do when it happens.

**𝗧𝗛𝗔𝗧'𝗦 𝗪𝗛𝗬 𝗪𝗘 𝗛𝗔𝗩𝗘 𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗩𝗜𝗧𝗬 𝗖𝗟𝗔𝗦𝗦.**

Tonight at Ruff Pup, we're working on helping owners better understand their dogs and develop the handling skills needed to navigate challenging situations.

We'll focus on:

🐾 Reading canine body language

🐾 Understanding thresholds

🐾 Managing distance and space

🐾 Improving leash handling

🐾 Reinforcement timing

🐾 Teaching alternative behaviors

🐾 Helping dogs develop better responses around distractions

And most importantly…

Because reactivity isn't something we solve by simply telling a dog to stop barking.

We need to understand what's happening and teach skills the dog can actually use.

**𝗧𝗪𝗢 𝗗𝗢𝗚𝗦 𝗖𝗔𝗡 𝗗𝗢 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗘𝗫𝗔𝗖𝗧 𝗦𝗔𝗠𝗘 𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗙𝗢𝗥 𝗖𝗢𝗠𝗣𝗟𝗘𝗧𝗘𝗟𝗬 𝗗𝗜𝗙𝗙𝗘𝗥𝗘𝗡𝗧 𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗦𝗢𝗡𝗦. 🐕**

Let's say two dogs bark when they see another dog.

One is afraid and wants the other dog to go away.

The other is excited and frustrated because they desperately want to say hello.

Same behavior.

**𝗩𝗘𝗥𝗬 𝗗𝗜𝗙𝗙𝗘𝗥𝗘𝗡𝗧 𝗗𝗢𝗚𝗦.**

And potentially very different training plans.

That's why I don't believe in simply looking at a behavior and immediately deciding how we're going to stop it.

I want to understand the dog.

What are they feeling?

What are they trying to accomplish?

What is happening in the environment?

What experiences have they had?

What needs aren't being met?

And most importantly…

**𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗪𝗢𝗨𝗟𝗗 𝗪𝗘 𝗟𝗜𝗞𝗘 𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗠 𝗧𝗢 𝗗𝗢 𝗜𝗡𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗔𝗗?**

For one dog, we might focus heavily on building confidence and creating positive experiences at a comfortable distance.

For another, we might focus on engagement, impulse control, and learning how to remain calm around exciting distractions.

Neither dog benefits from us ignoring WHY the behavior is happening.

This is a big part of our approach at Ruff Pup.

Especially in our **Day Camp program**, where we develop individualized training plans around each dog's needs and goals.

Because we're not trying to turn every dog into the same dog.

**We're helping each dog become a better version of themselves. ❤️**

And we're helping their families understand them along the way.

**𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗗𝗢 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗪𝗔𝗡𝗧 𝗬𝗢𝗨𝗥 𝗗𝗢𝗚 𝗧𝗢 𝗗𝗢 𝗜𝗡𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗔𝗗? 🤔🐕**

It's one of the most important questions I ask when working with a dog.

"My dog pulls on leash."

Okay. What would you like them to do instead?

"My dog barks every time someone comes to the door."

Okay. What would you like them to do instead?

"My dog jumps on everyone."

What would you like them to do instead?

Here's why that question matters.

**STOPPING A BEHAVIOR IS NOT THE SAME AS TEACHING A BETTER ONE.**

If your dog pulls, we could spend the entire walk trying to stop the pulling.

But have we actually taught them where we want them to walk?

If your dog barks at the door, we could spend all our time telling them to be quiet.

But have we taught them what they're supposed to do when someone knocks?

Sometimes the answer is simple.

Instead of pulling, I'd like my dog to walk beside me on a loose leash.

Instead of barking and rushing the door, I'd like my dog to go to Place and settle.

Instead of jumping, I'd like my dog to keep all four paws on the floor.

**NOW WE HAVE SOMETHING TO TRAIN.**

But here's where people sometimes get ahead of themselves.

Before we expect a dog to walk nicely beside us, we might need to teach them how to simply stand calmly at our side.

Before we expect them to go to Place when the doorbell rings, we need to teach a solid Place command without the doorbell!

We build the skill first.

Then we add distance, duration, and distractions.

Because dogs can't reliably perform behaviors they haven't been taught.

**Don't just ask, "How do I stop this?"**

Ask, **"What do I want my dog to do instead?"**

That's where training begins. ❤️🐾

🎓 Basic obedience

⏱️ Duration — holding behaviors longer

📏 Distance — responding when we're farther away

🌎 Distractions — listening when interesting things are happening

🐕 Loose-leash walking

🛏️ Place and settling

And we'll make time to help owners with specific challenges they're working through.

Because every dog is different.

Maybe your dog needs a better Stay.

Maybe they struggle to focus around other dogs.

Maybe you need help with leash handling.

Or maybe you've been practicing something at home and just can't seem to get past a certain point.

**THAT'S WHAT CLASS IS FOR!**

Bring your dog.

Bring your training equipment.
