This is why Iā€™m such a believer in starting grooming training early.

Short sessions. Lots of positive experiences. No waiting until thereā€™s a problem that has to be fixed.

Today Moxie was literally waiting for Kingston to finish because she wanted her turn. šŸ˜‚

Thatā€™s the goal. Grooming shouldnā€™t feel like something we have to battle through. It can be something theyā€™re comfortable with, confident about, and even excited to do. šŸ¾

Iā€™ve absolutely brushed my dogs outside and left the fur for the birds. It felt harmless and even a little helpful. But hereā€™s what I didnā€™t know.
Topical flea and tick treatments can leave pesticide residue on a dogā€™s coat. When birds collect that loose fur and use it to line their nests, the eggs and baby birds may be exposed too.
A study of fur-lined bird nests found flea-treatment insecticides in the nesting material. Higher concentrations were associated with more unhatched eggs and dead chicks.
This is not a reason to stop protecting your dog from fleas and ticks. Talk with your veterinarian about the right prevention for your dog. It is simply a reminder that if your dog uses a topical treatment, collect the loose coat after brushing and put it in the trash instead of leaving it in the yard.
Brush outside but bag the fur. Protect the birds. šŸ¾

We donā€™t build confidence by avoiding everything that feels new.

Today was Moxieā€™s first outside walk, and those first few minutes were a little wild. There were new sights, sounds, smells and a whole lot of excitement to process.

But as we kept going, she started to settle. She checked in more. She moved with me instead of in every direction. Little by little, I could see her realizing, ā€œOkay, I can do this.ā€

We canā€™t expect our dogs to automatically know how to move calmly through a world they havenā€™t experienced yet. We have to show them. Patiently. One safe experience, one training rep and one small win at a time.

And if this sounds a little like introducing a dog to groomingā€¦hint, hint. It is LOL.

Today wasnā€™t perfect, but it wasnā€™t supposed to be.

It was progress. And Iā€™m so proud of her.

Not every walk has to be about how far you go. šŸ¾

Some days weā€™re walking with a purpose: steady pace, moving our bodies, getting some exercise.

Other days, itā€™s a sniff walk. Kingston gets to stop, explore and smell ALL the things. Itā€™s great mental stimulation and just as important.
