It’s been a hot minute since we’ve shared an update! We definitely didn’t mean to take a two week break, but now that summer is here, many of the animals have been hiding away from the Texas heat, which means there’s been a little less content for us to share.

Yesterday, however, gave us some exciting updates!

George got to meet our farrier for the first time &, to nobody’s surprise, he was an absolute gentleman & did wonderfully.

Little Texas, on the other hand, is currently on stall rest. After noticing him limping, we consulted with both our vet & farrier, & we believe he may have slipped in the mud on Monday & hyperextended his back right leg.

The good news is that his leg isn’t hot to the touch, which is encouraging since heat is one of the body’s classic signs of inflammation as it works to heal an injury. Our farrier was able to trim him without any problems, & our veterinarian has him on Bute for a few days. So for now, all we can do is give him time, let him rest, & monitor his progress.

Summer may be slower around here, but we’d love to know what YOU would enjoy seeing more of from Windy Hill Farm Animal Sanctuary!

It’s hard to put into words just how thankful we are for all the rain we’ve been blessed with this year, especially after the back to back droughts.

While feeding yesterday between storms, God painted a beautiful reminder across the sky of His love, mercy, & faithfulness 🌈

No matter what season we’re walking through, He is always there.

Been keeping a little secret 🤫

When a family friend came to us about their 15 year old miniature horse who had lost his longtime best friend, Sammie the donkey, & was looking for not only new friends but greener pastures, how could we say no?

Hearing Little George’s story took us right back to losing Naomi in January & watching how deeply her passing affected not only us, but also her best friend of a little over a year, Karen. Thankfully, it wasn’t long after that we were introduced to Miss Mini Pearl, who has been an amazing friend to everyone here at the farm.

Not wanting George to endure his loneliness a moment longer, we happily welcomed him home last Sunday. Horses are herd animals that thrive on the companionship of other equines, so every horse deserves a good friend.

Funny enough, the miniature horses Pearl lived with before her rescue were black & white pintos just like George. Like every animal here, God truly has a hand in bringing the right ones home ❤️

We wanted to give George a week to settle in before making his introduction. Today was his first day out with Little Texas’ group, which includes Karen & Pearl, & we are happy to report he fits right in.

Yesterday was our 3rd Annual Picnic At The Farm & even though Texas gave us cloudy skies instead of sunshine, we were thankful for the very slight relief from the heat. Think the humidity was definitely trying to remind us summertime is just around the corner 😅 We loved getting to welcome all the families who came out to visit the animals, support local vendors, & slow down for a little while. Getting to share this little farm & the animals we love so dear with others truly means the world to us.

We want to give some very special thank yous:

💚 To our vendors — Poolville Global Methodist Church, All Things Little.co, This & That Creative Woodworking, Everyday Elegance Jewelry, & Raspberry Ridge Homestead — Thank y’all so much for being part of our event! We are so grateful for the time, effort, & heart each of you poured into spending your Sunday with us.

💛 To our volunteer, LaDonna Casey — Your support, kindness, & willingness to help means more than words can say. We truly couldn’t do these events without you!

💙 Most importantly, to everyone who came — Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Whether you helped share our event, bought a hotdog, loved on the animals, shopped with the vendors, donated, or simply came to spend a little time at the farm, every bit of support matters, so THANK YOU!

Because of all of YOU, we were able to raise $120 through donations, vendor fees, & our hotdog fundraiser 🌭 Every bit of that will be going toward Miss Windy’s recent vet visit for her leg injury & Mister Pocket’s treatment after his brave battle with severe EPM this past fall 🐴

Small sanctuaries like ours get to continue because of the kindness & support of people like y’all. There’s just something special about slowing down for a few hours on the farm — hearing the animals, visiting with neighbors, watching children play, & being reminded that even small gatherings can leave a big impact.

Windy definitely woke up on the wrong side of the stall yesterday morning, making it VERY clear she did not want to go to the vet clinic, but after a little happy juice, she decided maybe it wasn’t so bad after all 😅

Dr. Sweatt was very concerned about the possibility of cellulitis, which is a severe & rapidly progressing bacterial infection that can cause sudden, painful swelling in a horse’s leg. Thankfully, to everyone’s relief, Windy’s cut looked good!

But because of where the injury is located, however, the wound will likely continue reopening as she moves around. To help prevent that & give it the best chance to fully heal, her leg was wrapped & she was started on antibiotics. While she was there, she also got updated on all of her vaccines too!

Miss Windy will continue to be on stall rest to give her leg time to properly heal… which she is NOT thrilled about 😂

A huge thank you to Dr. Sweatt & his techs at North Texas Veterinary Hospital for taking such wonderful care of Windy. We can never thank y’all enough!

As many of you know, caring for animals is never ending, & vet bills can add up quickly. Our May 17th hotdog fundraiser during Picnic At The Farm will be helping go toward Windy’s vet expenses.
