Is your puppy being difficult, or are they just exhausted?

Meet Benny!

In the first half of this video, Benny has just woken up from a nap. He’s attentive, focused, and walking nicely on a loose leash.

Now watch Benny at 3 PM.

Same puppy. Same training. Very different behavior.

After a day of training and play, and even with naps, Benny is overstimulated and having a much harder time focusing and walking nicely on leash.

Puppies need sleep to learn!

When puppies become overtired, their ability to practice impulse control and focus is almost nonexistent. Redirecting can suddenly become difficult.

This is why structured naps and downtime is so important with young puppies.

Sometimes the answer isn’t more training, more exercise, or more corrections. It’s a nap.

Remember, we aren’t just teaching puppies what to do. We’re also teaching them how to rest, recover, and regulate themselves. ❤️

Benny is 16 weeks old and developmentally ready to learn how to walk on a loose leash.

Handlers often focus so much on their puppy’s behavior that they overlook their own handling skills. That can make leash training frustrating for everyone involved.

Leash training is part of building a relationship with your dog. You’re teaching your puppy to pay attention to you and move together with you. Leash pressure should be minimal, used briefly to slow them down or guide their direction, then released when they respond.

Think of the leash like holding a toddler’s hand in public. You provide guidance until they can make good decisions, control their impulses, and stay aware of what’s happening around them. Your puppy is learning those same skills.

If there’s always pressure on the leash, your puppy still needs help learning to slow down, stay with you, and keep the leash loose. Those skills need to be taught—and your handling is a big part of that. 🙂

This is a really hard post to make.
Bailey, lovingly called Bailey Bones, has crossed over the rainbow bridge.
Bailey was such an amazing dog. We were lucky enough to be his vacation home. Bailey loved hikes and swimming and he loved playing with small dogs. He would lay on the ground and let them crawl all over him.
Bailey was so goofy. He would lay down in the middle of the room and just whine to let you know he was bored lol
He loved to sit in front of you and look back, or pop his head over your shoulder.
Bailey had some stranger danger but learned to trust and made a lot of friends at the field.
So sorry to his family and very thankful he got to be apart or ours ❤️😢
